whining noise from the front end

I have a 2007 G6 V6 and I have a loud whining noise coming from the front end, starts around 15-20mph and speeds up and slows down as I speed up and slow down. The noise doesn't change if I turn or hit a bump, car still drives straight, nothing loose in the steering. Shifted into neutral while I was driving and no change in sound. Figured maybe a wheel bearing or something to do with the half shaft or cv joints but I figured if it was a wheel bearing the heat generated by a bad bearing would make the hub/wheel really hot, and would probably affect the abs sensor, especially after a half hour drive at 50mph but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Any help would be appreciated.

Jack up the front end and spin the wheels by hand, you'll hear a bad bearing.
to me it almost sounds like you have a rock or something caught between the rotor and dust shield.
Is it like a screeching sound at all.

It sounds like a bad power steering or water pump, I can't hear a grinding/grating type noise. Transmission shifts smooth, no slips or clunks. Got my neighbors opinion after a short drive and putting it up on ramps (I will not be doing that again). Was some black gunk, not really grease or oil that I could tell, around where the half-shaft and axle go into the trans. Can those bearings be replaced or would I be better off getting new halfshafts, if that's what it turns out to be?

Jacked up the car and wiggled the wheels around, only play is in the bad tie-rod ends that need replaced. Couldn't hear a sound other than the brake pads sliding on the rotors. Will take off the wheels and calipers tomorrow weather permitting and see what's up. Was also able to check the transmission seals and no leakage around the halfshaft/axle.

Question Whining noise on front end

Did you ever find out what was causing that noise? I'm having the same issue on my 06 4cyl G6.

the simplest fixes are often the best.

Yeah, it was the wheel bearing. Replaced the hub assembly and can't hear a thing. Although I may have to take it off and check the abs sensor. I needed to use some "persuasion" to get the assembly back in and may have damaged it, abs and traction control don't work and the idiot lights are on. Will have to remember a wire brush next time to clean off any corrosion and whatnot. Luckily, or not, I bought 2 assemblies and if I messed the one up too badly I can replace it. But I would have to buy another one for the other side, lol.
