Quick Question about Timing Chain

Hi,
I currently have 97000 miles on my 2008 G6 2.4L. Should I be changing my timing chain soon? I'm concerned about my engine being damaged if it breaks. Will it damage my engine? I'm having a hard time finding info on it

Timing chains don't need to be serviced like timing belts do. It should last a long time in a stock motor with out any maintenance needed.

I've been reading around the cobalt forums. The most I see about the timing comes down to the guides that the chain runs against. Those can go out but usually way further down the road. In some cases the tensioner can fail causing slapping sounds and possibly skip timing.

Anything else I've read usually pertains to the performance side, people replace the balance shafts so they can rev over 7000 rpm.

Also the water pump in the 2.4 is driven by the timing chain, so if you do dive into it, its also a good time to replace that.

But all in all you should be alright. I doubt the engine had a hard life doing those miles, if it was a cobalt ss I'd say otherwise. But I'm sure your chain is still in good shape

Thanks for the responses! I'll replace the more important stuff at 100K and not worry about the timing chain as much.

A transmission service is a great idea at 100,000 miles. Spark plugs are also recommended at 100k, might as well change the plug wires as well.

Full tune up time! I'll be replacing my plugs at 60K ...currently just over 46K now on my GT. 100K is a bit long to go unless you drive 100% highway at speeds under 65mph. Higher rpm increases wear/heat.

In normal service (water pump aside) you shouldn't have to replace the timing chain in an engine. Knowingly, the vehicle will rust through the floor and frame before a chain replacement is necessary. I have V6/V8 fleet trucks with over 350K miles and never taken apart. Longest running engine now is the Astro 4.3L V6. My older Ford van threw its 3rd and final transmission, although the 5.4L V8 was still going strong.

Fact about my G6 GT: In 74,000kms (46K miles) on my G6, I've only replaced the engine oil 5 times (using full synthetics) - in 6 years.

'11 Ram SXT 4x4 quad cab - 5.7L V8; 75,500kms
'06 Pontiac G6 GT - 3.5L V6; 113,000kms
'12 Chrysler 200 - 3.6L V6; 58,000kms
