I'm getting around 21 in town and about 33 on the hwy, with gas here in NC at 190 a gallon, I sure enjoy the mileage the G6 gets, wonder if a K&N air filter and synthetic oil would improve on these numbers?

I average around 25.5 - 26.0 MPG so far. I drive around a 30 mile round trip to work everday that is mostly highway but it is still over a mixed loop. This counts sitting in Houston rush hour traffic both ways. The worst mileage so far was over the Christmas holidays @ 22.5 MPG and that was in holiday traffic running around near the house. I haven't had the chance to make a road trip in it yet but I could see getting near 30.0 MPG.

You guys must have your foot in it. :bolt: :D

24.5 MPG since my wife has been driving it. When I was driving it was around 20-21.

And I drive more on highway that she does

I get 25 to 26 on the highway everyday on a 50 mile round trip back and forth between home and school.. home and work.. and in the city driving i get about 14 to 18 depending on traffic levels and acceleration.. when driving fast i feel like when the speedometer goes up i can see the fuel guage go down haha.. but w/e.. it's life

I am averaging right around 26 on the highway and in the city. It is a 32 miles roundtrip for me with both highway and city (if you can even call it city traffic). I got 29 after filling up one time. But the next morning I went out to start it and had to chip away at 1/4 inch of ice before I could drive. So it went back down to 24.

Wait..you know I probably figured out my awesome gas mileage.. I use the remote start every single day (multiple times) and the car usually sits and warms up for ~15mins if not longer.

Wait a minute...The manual as well as my dealer told me the remote start will run "about" 10 minutes before shutting off. How are you getting >15 minutes then? Is there a way of changing the setting. I know on my old '97 Tahoe with a Prestige aftermarket alarm/autostart I could change the setting from 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes. I could even set it to automatically start and run for that time period every 2 hours with touching a button. I never used it, but would come in handy on those -30 nights to let it run and warm up every few hours.

...The manual as well as my dealer told me the remote start will run "about" 10 minutes before shutting off.

Actually the manual says

The remote start feature provides two separate starts,
each with 10 minutes of engine running. Or it provides
one start with 10 minutes of engine running, which
can be extended by 10 more minutes. Once two starts
have been provided, the ignition switch must be
cycled to on and then off, to get two more remote starts.
This means if you time it exactly you can use the 2 remote "starts" to get a total of almost 20 minutes engine run time. When you perform the 2nd remote "start" you basically reset the timer to 10 minutes.

Filled up last night, on the way home I was getting 31 mpg  on my G6 GT :D and it was 12 degrees. It won't last though because I let my car warm up which kills that 31. I still have been averaging 26 though :D No complaints here.

Ok, but that is not a continuous run. After the first 10 minutes is up it shuts off, then you start it again. Am I reading this right?

Honestly, when it is cold out you only need to let your car warm up for 1 minute. Then it is safe to drive, but just go easy on it until the engine and tranny warms up. Anything over 1 minute is overkill IMO and can do more damage than not if left sitting idle for say 10 minutes or so.

It can be continuous if you are careful.

Do a remote start (Press Lock and then Press and Hold Remote Start button)

After almost 10 minutes are up, repeat first step

As long as you do this before the first 10 minute timer expires the vehicle will continue to run for another 10 minutes.

You cannot extend remote start running beyond 2 cycles without inserting key into ignition switch and turning to RUN.

It will vary dramatically across the seasons!

Here is an example of my Honda Civic. In the summer I get ~ 9 L/100km. In the witner it takes up to 12 L/100km (It shows the number of litres used to drive 100km. I have tracked every fill up since I got the car!). For my Windstar it ranges from 12 l/100km up to 18l/100 km in the winter!

I do since I have lived in MN for most of my life. I know what it is like to get in a cold car. The sooner you get driving the faster it is going to get warmed up. And yes, 1 minute is enough time for your car. My G6 warms up a lot faster than my Tahoe did. Obvious enough reason right there.

My G6 is now averaging 28 MPG :D I filled up one night after work and was getting 31 on the way home  I can't wait until it warms up so I don't have to use the auto start and sit there waiting for it to warm up (just not 20 min like some of you) so I can get better gas mileage than what I am now.

EDIT: BTW, what kind of gas is everyone using. I don't mean what octane since it takes regular 87 (or whatever your state has for the lowest octane). But from what gas station? I use nothing but Quicktrip gas. Becuase it is a "Top Tier" gasoline and is 100% guaranteed meaning if I ever have a fuel related problem with any of my vehicles (using QT gas) they solve the problem. BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota all approve this Top Tier gas because the minimum amount of additives required by the EPA just isn't enough for them.
http://www.quiktrip.com/gasoline/TopTier.asp
Some of the other links on the left have more.

Other top tier gas stations include: Chevron, Conoco, Phillips 76, Shell, and Entec. I am suprised Mobil isn't on there yet

I owned a 400+hp modified lt1... gas mileage means nothing.. ;)

Im running 87 octane...no point in higher since the pcm isnt going to utilize it anyways..and no special treatment here... its just a g6.. i grab gas at the nearest station when Im low.

I just bought a 2006 used G6 with 6,000 miles on it. On the information screen it says that I am averaging 24 mpg in teh city, but I have only gone 90 miles and am already 3/8ths through my tank of gas. Since the tank hold 16 gallons and if I was getting 24 miles to the gallon then at a half of a tank I should be able to go 192 miles. But if I look at the odometer and see that I have only gone 90 miles through 3/8ths of the tank (roughly 6 gallons); 90/6= 15.

So I guess my questions is is the fuel gauge off or is the driver info pannel wrong because I am coming to 2 different conclusions...

thedell19
03-02-2006, 10:30 AM
No I didnt factor in that the bottom half of the tank is smaller. If the bottom half was smaller wouldnt that mean that the first half of tank of gas would last longer than the second half of a tank? I have not yet reached the half way mark. I am at the hash mark between 1/4 and 1/2.

Lucius

Did you factor in that the bottom half of the tank is smaller?

The gas gauge tells you how the amount of gas in your tank, not where it sits in the tank. Therefore, that doesn't matter.

I'm getting just over 20 mpg combined driving. I warm it up for about a minute or two.

I Drive a 6 speed GTP Coupe and I drive in Canada in metric measures.

For the first 6 000 Kilometers, I got 12,3 liters/kilometers.

If I do a conversion it gives me 29 US Gals or 34 UK Gals.

But when I switch from Metric to English, the info center shows some 18 miles / gallon.

I don't know if it's US or UK gallons.... but 18 miles/gallon does'nt even compare with both conversion tables.

So I wonder if the info center is OK ???

I drove mine 10 miles after the low fuel light came on and the guage was sitting right on E the entire time. I could only get 13.5 gallons in the car after that so there is some error on the guage.

3 cylinders? what are you smoking lol. 87 is recommended for the G6 so anyhting else is just a waste. As long as the engine is not pinging its ok to use a lower octane even on engines that reccomend premium.

I must have been smoking something really good...lol. Yeah I meant 6 cylinders...

So there must be about 2-3 gallons of gas in a "reserve tank" or something... or it is possible tha the guage tells you it is empty when it really isnt so that you wont run out of gas? That would not be a bad idea... I know it is that way on my wife's Rodeo.

Lucius

Never heard of a car actually being out of fuel when the guage reaches "E." I've driven before where the needle actually goes below that on some cars.

However I drove 210 miles and if you do the math 210/10.5= 20 miles to the gallon. So there has got to be something wrong with the info pannel. This was a mix between highway and city (mostly city) which would make sense if it was actually 24 miles to the gallon. But it wasnt. averaged 23-24 for the first 500 miles, the next 1000 dropped down to 21-22 (mpg, US)

we just had a nice increase in temp of about 10 degrees here, and in the same day it shot back up to over 22. i have not been easy on it for the last 1200 miles or so (currently 1600+).

so i must be averaging WELL above 23 or 24 in order for a jump that fast, as i usually see it move by the tenths over the course of a day or so and it jumped a whole mile per gallon as i was beasting around going to job interviews. i haven't calculated the mileage myself lately though, i've been tossing in 5-20 in the tank and haven't filled up for a while.

i have a feeling that it'll average pretty high when the weather gets better. currently 40-50 degrees out to see the jump.

note that i'm letting the DIC average mileage for the life of the vehicle. next time i fill up i'll note the new mileage

(2.4 ecotec...)

roughly 2400 miles. DIC indicated an average of 23.7 for my last tank (filled up this morning) and my calculations indicated 24.7xx. not too bad for 95% of driving being in rush hour. by the time i got to work today, it hit 23.9.

it's not bad at all considering how heavy this thing is and how it moves. they could have been much more conservative on gearing and they'd average MUCH better than they do. i'm usually above 2k no matter what.

not to mention the ecotec is notoriously tight and is known to get better mileage with over 20-30k miles on them.

car was still hovering at 27, calculated actual mileage at fillup last time, was at 24.5 or so.

began driving a little more "spirited" again to test this out. i'm now at 24.5 (this has been ALL city for weeks now) per the DIC, and will update at next fillup. (reset DIC EVERY fillup to calculate against my own numbers)

last time i calculated, mileage was actually above what the DIC indicated. this time it was below. both times were roughly the same per actual calculations. also of note is i just did my first oil change...

My 3.5 SE1 has gotten 26.5, 26.7, 28.1, 26.6, & 27.9 on average per tank since I picked it up six weeks ago. That's calculated, not from the DIC. Mostly back country roads in upstate New York, and yes I drive like an old lady. My last car was a 2.4 GA and at best got 25 on the same routes, so I'm pretty happy. Somehow it still costs the same at the pump though, must be driving more.

I was going through fuel slips today for the G6 for the 6 months that I had it, and with approx 50/50 split between city and highway and varied anywhere between agressive (read: floored or on the brakes) to light (read: touring grandparents) I was averaging 29 MPG (8.1L/100KM) overall. On the highway (115 km/hr, cruise control) I have had 35 MPG (6.7L/100KM) regularly on extended trips. In pure city, it's been as low as 24 MPG (9.8L/100KM). That's for the 2.4L G6. Tire pressures at 31psi all around.

For comparison, my HHR with the same engine and 50 LBS less overall weight gets me 21 MPG in the city and 28 on the highway at best! The G6 4-cyl is pretty amazing on gas, not sure why some of you are getting wacky numbers with it.
