: Some brake questions
70monte 11-06-2008, 08:58 PM A friend of mine's daughter has a 2005 G6 coupe. He wants me to do the front & rear brakes on this car but I've never done the ones on a G6. I have done the ones on a 98 Grand Prix before. Can anyone tell me what the torque specs are for the caliper bolts? What else do I need to look out for or do special on these brakes?. Thanks for any help you can give.

Lampoon 11-07-2008, 07:04 AM You need the borg tool for the rear to compress the e-brake piston.
Specs?? I just turned till it was tight! ha haaa
Here is a write up I did in the past on it...
1) Loosten lug nuts on wheel
2) Jack up car and remove wheel.
3) Remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper together
4) Move caliper up and rest it on your upper control arm thingy.
5) Take needle nose plyers and remove retention washers on the wheel studs.
6) Remove rotor by pulling it straight off.
7) Put new Rotor on being mindful of direction if you have the slotted option.
8 ) If any washers are salvageable from #5 put them back on. If not dont worry about it.
9) Pick up caliper and rotate back down.
10) Replace metal retention clips.
11) Remove old pads but be mindful of which side has the metal squeel replacement warning device.
12) C-clamp the piston down flush for ease in install.
13) Paint anti-sqeel crap onto outside of the pad where it will touch the calpier & slide new pads in.
14) Put caliper back on and bolt down.
15) check everything then reattach wheel.
16) Before turning on your car- pump the brakes slowly to re-engage the piston against the pads.
I would do this about a half dozen time slowly then a few fast times to the floor. Feel it tighten up?
Go drive it!!
Rear wheel:
Yes the same but add a
12.5) You need to insert the Borg tool into the E-brake piston and with a 3/4 drive you
torq it down.
and add a
17) Pull up on the ebrake handle many time until it gets tight. This will re-engage the
e-brake piston to the caliper pads.
Im sure Im missing a few things.... Oh yeah
18) Raise a Beer and yell "POOOOOONERS"!!!!!

Ooops...almost forgot.
Here is your Borg Brake Tool:

70monte 11-07-2008, 03:11 PM Lampoon,
Thanks for the info. I do have the Borg tool so I'm good there. I guess I'll just tighten the bolt down until it feels tight enough unless I can find the torque specs somewhere. Does anyone have a service manual for this car that might have this info in it? Thanks again.
Wayne
Lampoon 11-07-2008, 09:35 PM I have both service manuals but Im lazy. I will glance through it but there are thousands of pages...lol
Lampoon 11-08-2008, 07:44 AM Ok. Page 5-105.
They are self retaining fasteners that DO NOT require thread locking compounds.
The brake caliper mounting bracket bolts are tightened to 115 N-m (85 lb ft).
Now I have a question for you!
WHO'S UR BUDDY???

Thanks for the info and YOU ARE! I'm sure I will have some more questions before it is all over.

Romeos Tune 10-26-2009, 06:04 PM This is great! Thanks Lampoon! I just ordered some new rotors and will attempt to get them on myself. Doesn't look bad.
solidhadriel 10-26-2009, 06:16 PM I just did this over the weekend. It was a piece of cake...minus repeatedly screwing up my paint job on my calipers that I'm completely unsatisfied with... but other than that - I wasn't aware of the "borg" tool and found out the hard way...and just needle-nosed plier'ed it down... worked perfectly. ;)
Romeos Tune 10-26-2009, 06:21 PM Hey, I have needle-nose pliers. lol I might paint my calipers while I'm at it.
solidhadriel 10-26-2009, 06:42 PM Have any color ideas in mind for the calipers on your silver G6?
Romeos Tune 10-26-2009, 06:50 PM I guess I'll do them red. I thought about blue to be different but not sure how it'd look.
solidhadriel 10-26-2009, 07:02 PM I was having a hard time deciding for my car's color... red goes with almost anything...so I went red/yellow. lol
Romeos Tune 10-26-2009, 07:09 PM I bet that looks good! I guess I'm still making up my mind. lol
solidhadriel 10-26-2009, 07:43 PM I think most colors will look good as long as you don't screw up the paint in the process... which is what I did...sorta. haha.
Romeos Tune 10-26-2009, 08:16 PM lol... Well, I'll do everything else and the paint last. :-D I will learn from you. lol
solidhadriel 10-27-2009, 04:21 PM Here was my end result from this past weekend:

Lampoon 10-27-2009, 05:11 PM Oh no....they are on backwards!
JUST KIDDEN....
Your two tone is like a bag of skittles!
solidhadriel 10-27-2009, 05:48 PM haha... I'm not really sure how I feel about them. To be honest, I think I want to repaint them silver or black. Or maybe both silver and black. I don't know if I like how the color contrasts with my car's colors. I haven't decided if I like them this way or not.... :(
Romeos Tune 10-27-2009, 08:29 PM I guess I've decided to go red on mine. Good job Solid!
Romeos Tune 10-27-2009, 08:31 PM I think a really bright silver would look good too.
solidhadriel 10-28-2009, 07:54 AM Hey thanks... I think when I get my new rims I'm going to repaint them black (where the yellow is) and silver (where the red is)... Since the color of my car makes the red/yellow look out of contrast...Then again, I do kinda like it when I look at it. :p
Romeos Tune 10-28-2009, 06:51 PM That would look good too! I dunno that I'll ever get new rims. I actually like the ones on the car now. Who knows though. I could always see some and fall in love with'em. Next for me is either the rotors and pads, should get the rotors tomorrow or Friday. Or...I'm getting a new ECM from Chris any time. Hopefully before the weekend. Definitely put it in first. I've got the 91 tune in now from Vector and going to 93. Then after that, I'll get an intake.
solidhadriel 10-28-2009, 09:43 PM Sweet sweet. I mainly want larger front tires (and all around) for the better grip and handling... 19's...is what I'm after. Just big enough to help catch grip, just small enough to not weigh the car acceleration down. 17's are just too small and slip too easily. :p
jayshaw91 11-01-2009, 06:22 PM Hey folks, great thread. I'm far from a mechanic, but changing the front brakes wasn't hard after I figured out what I was looking at.
The rear... that's another story. I can't get the retaining bolts off. I'd swear there is Threadlok on them as all 4 bolts are pink tinted on the outside. I managed to get one off and it was pink tinted pretty much all over.
Anyway, so the top retaining bolt seems to be blocked by some other bolt. That's problem one. Number 2 is that I absolutely cannot get the other three to break.
So back to my original statement about not being much of a mechanic. I'm sure if I get a breaker bar and pound the crap out of it I'll get it. Any other ideas? They won't move!
FYI, I also hit 'em all with PB Blaster and they're soaking overnight.
Thanks everyone!
Lampoon 11-02-2009, 06:08 AM Mine wernt that hard. What size ratchet are you using?? 3/4"?
If you have a small hammer you might try tapping the ratchet to help break it.
I dont mean BANG on it....just tappa tappa tappa while holding it snug on the bolt.
I dont recall anything being blocked. I will be pulling my wheels off in the next few days to clean and touch up a fe spots on my calipers. I will look at the backs and take a few snaps of the bolts you remove.
I dont recall it being difficult at all.....
jayshaw91 11-02-2009, 07:40 PM Neeeeever mind. A breaker bar helped. And yeah, they sucked to get 'em off. Damn near rounded the bolts off cuzz the 13mm socket I borrowed from my neighbor was a POS. A quick trip to the store and that was fixed.
Anything I should be looking for or doing? I drove it around the block a couple of times and seemed fine. I did pump the foot brake and emergency brake quite a bit before taking off.
Mucho gracias, boys and girls!
Lampoon 11-03-2009, 06:47 AM Cool beans.....& DAAAAAAY NADA!!
solidhadriel 11-04-2009, 12:40 PM Oh snaps  Pooners busting out the bilingual.
No sé hablo éspañol. :p
Ensur3 11-04-2009, 05:35 PM Solid, are those brand new rotors or zinc plated?
