: any updates re: panoramic roof noise?

Guys, the noise from my p-roof is REALLY starting to bother me. I mean it is just constant tapping/rattling/knocking/etc. The only time I don't hear it is if I just blast the stereo. And it is not that noticeable when driving at higher speeds. But most of my driving is done at low speeds, in town. This is annoying as heck. I have still yet to take it into the dealer. I am afraid that they will want to take the headliner down to try to repair it, and I am VERY hesitant to do that. I am starting to think this might be a problem for as long as I own the car. I really hope not because that would be a big disappointment.

Does anyone have any updated info on this problem? Anyone have this problem and get it resolved by a dealer? Is there a service bulletin on this yet?

I don't know much about this kinda thing, but this should be covered under your warrenty. This car isn't even a year old yet, and this new sunroof is already giving these problems?

This makes me hesitant to get it, I hope it's not that bad of a problem

Honestly, it's pretty bad. In my opinion. It's not something that I just want to "live with". Now let me say that I have NOT taken it in to the dealer yet to try to get the problem resolved. If they can fix it, that's great. I would be happy. But if not, I'm going to be pretty disappointed that I chose to get the P-roof.

But that is the only problem I have had with the vehicle, other than twice my 6 disc changer has locked up on me. That seems to be a pretty common problem though and it corrected itself. I love the car otherwise.

I used to have the noise every once in a while, but since it's warmed up here, i haven't heard it at all. I would suggest you just go to the dealer and have them fix it because if it does it alot, it will just get worse over time.

So...what exactly IS this problem...what causes, what does it sound like, why?

Its a light rattling noise coming from the headliner when traveling at low speeds.

i have posted this before, but I will describe exactly what I'm hearing again....

there is a tapping noise that comes from directly above the driver's head. It sounds like someone tapping on glass. And then there is a fairly loud rattle or pop that comes from toward the rear of the sunroof area whenever you go over a bump or an incline. But it can also happen for no apparent reason, just driving down the road. The best way I can describe it is it sounds like 2 pieces of plastic sliding together and then when they hit you hear a "pop" or a "click".

The only thing I noticed its a bit noisier at certain speeds depending on how much you have it open... like if I have at 1 or 4 it sounds fine on the freeway and at 2 or 3, its a bit nosier.

Of course the noise I hear is from the airflow going over the car.... I haven't had any noise related to how well the roof is made...

Um not that I know of

I think if you're having troubles, your best bet would simply be to go back to your dealership and tell them that you are experiencign these problems, and you have other G6 owners who have as well.

It should be under warrenty, god willing.

I found a similar popping noise over the front driver and passengers head and concluded that it was coming from the bottom corner of the panoramic roof rubbing against the backside of the fiberglass headliner. There were two plastic embossments (found where the metal track and plastic front corner section intersected) that protruded downward into the headliner. I just pulled the headliner down out of the surrounding trim seal of the panoramic opening to expose the front corner. Then I took the soft side of a piece of Velcro, stuck it across these two embossments and eliminated the noise.

I am having the same issue. It seems that it has gotten worse since it's been hot here. (Mid 90's almost half the month!) I need to get it looked it. It's REALLY annoying, and quite embarasssing when trying to convince someone that they should get a G6!

Have any of you tried to find out where it might be coming from have somone else drive your car and then you listen and look??

I agree with the Panoramic Guy. I was able to eliminate the noise on my car by putting a felt spacer on the bottom of the black plastic bosses that were rubbing against the headliner. Sounded like an itchy noise while going over bumps, mostly at slower speeds. It's not that hard to get to. Need to pull off the lace around the opening, then bend the headliner down just a little. The bosses are on both sides, so make sure you cover both with felt. You can you this, or ask the dealer to .

I've taken my car back twice now for this issue. (As well as once for the six-disc changer, but that is fixed now.. hopefully.) The dealership claims to of fixed the moonroof both times, and both times I have gotten a good 12 hours out of it before it starts making the noise again.

I put in a call to my salesman to see if he can assist with the service department. Thank you guys for confirming I am not crazy! This also didn't happen the first few months I had the car.

I bought my G6 GT in March of this year. I had been to 3 dealerships and none of them had any G6's with the panoramic roofs. I asked why and they told me that they had not gotten any because Pontiac was still very leary of the noise they make and leaks. So needless to say I got a G6 with a regular sunroof, thank goodness. I would have bought a G6 with a panoramic roof if they would have had one, but it's a good thing they didn't b/c I've had enough problems without a panoramic roof. Point being, according to the dealership I bought from, Pontiac is aware of the noise that the panoramic roofs can make.

Any of you guys have a pic of those corrective spacers used to eliminate the noise?

it is really driving us crazy also.
Gonna schedule an app't w/ dealer. This should be a real trip.......
Will keep all informed

My panoramic noise is finally fixed! It only took literally 5 trips to the dealership, and over two weeks without my car total.

It was the sunshade assembly according to the dealer. Which is odd, because the noise wasn't coming from that exact area. But they fixed it. I even tested it on a roundtrip to Toronto from Detroit with no rattling.

Now they just need to fix the wind noise... Which I am told will be this week. According to the dealership, there is new weatherstripping for the G6 to correct that issue. They have it on order, but it has not arrived yet.

I'll report back on that, and if the rattling comes back. It finally took me taking the service manager of the dealership for a ride to get him to acknowledge the problem...

Excellent news!

Did they say exactly what it was in the sunshade assembly that was making the noise? See if you can get them to elaborate on the source.

When that new weatherstripping comes in, try to get a part number to include in your post. That'll make it easier to convince other service depts. that there is indeed a problem, and that there is an easy fix for it.

While picking up some new wiper blades at the dealer yesterday, the service manager mentioned that they had gotten a Service Bulletin a couple of days ago for creaking/popping from the Pano roof.

According to him, they are to drop the headliner and insert thin neoprene washers between the sunroof frame and the roof at the mounting points.

Sounds like the complaints may have finally gotten their attention.

Do you think that you can get a TSB number for it?

Hey Guys....

Just a tidbit of info for the panoramic roof problem.
I have been to the dealer for this problem and they said I need the rubber spacers/washers to eliminate this noise.
I've been waiting four weeks (on the 9th of December). I've had the owner of the car dealership call to ask how the service was, but when I asked what the hold up was for the parts, I could sense the total upbeat attitude he had change to a I'll look into it for you". That was two weeks ago.
I think Pontiac knows they have a problem with the panoramic roofs...

I was in for service last week and I asked if they could put the rubber washers the roof because I have been having problems with noise since I made my purchase. They said they have never heard of any problems with the roof, and neither has GM???? I know its a problem, that is known to GM and probably any dealer that sells these cars. What can I do to get them to do something about my problem. Can someone post some refrence numbers, or something I can use.

I have had my G6 with panoramic sunroof to the dealership twice with rattling noise. According to my dealership GM posted a bulletin on December 14, 2005, that GM dealerships may view online, addressing this issue. My dealership has ordered parts to correct this problem and I am waiting for them to call me to bring my car in to fix it. I will post my results asap.

I got mine back from being fixed. Called to schedule on Monday, dropped it off Tuesday morning, picked it up Tuesday afternoon.

It's actually FIXED.

I've driven the nastiest roads that used to make it creak and pop to the point of making me want to abandon it on the side of the road.

Not a sound. It doesn't even make a sound when I turn up into my driveway, which hits the street at a 45degree angle (talk about stress and body flex).

My dealer went ahead and put some felt between the bosses and the headliner as well, to keep them from having to address that should it ever start to make the scratching sounds.

Then, to top it all off, they detailed my car including the engine...for FREE. (they have earned my next vehicle purchase)
