: Improving Gas Mileage
lrish 10-12-2005, 09:03 AM I'm getting lousy gas mileage. Granted, I drive locally 98% of the time but I do open it up and drive an hour away (and back) about 2-3 times a month....still the gas mileage is pretty lousy.

Think this product will do anything?
How about the stupid thing that sits in the airfilter that you see on tv for sale around 3am? The tornado, or whatever its called.
How do I improve gas milage?
Fusion 10-12-2005, 09:08 AM I don't believe any of those miracle products. Especially not the tornado. I would only use proven methods and products.
lrish 10-12-2005, 09:14 AM what are proven methods and products?
Fusion 10-12-2005, 09:34 AM Tests that have been conducted by a reliable third party.
lrish 10-12-2005, 09:47 AM Is there anyway you can elaborate? Such as specific things I can do or buy? Cold air intake? Does that help? What are my options?
Fusion 10-12-2005, 09:55 AM I haven't modified anything engine wise on my g6 yet, but i know that quite a few other people have removed part and even all of the stock intake system which i'm sure would help with airflow, thus increasing a few MPG. If you decide to go with a CAI make sure that it has heat shields, and comes from a reputable company ie K&N, Injen, etc. Also, if you watch any of the car/truck shows specifically horsepower tv. They state that the tornado doesn't help with air flow by circulating it. it actually decreases the airflow by causing it to slow down. The whole idea of getting a new Air intake is to eliminate the bends and air pockets to create a smooth and fast flow of air.
lrish 10-12-2005, 10:02 AM ahhh see, thats the kind of info i was fishing for. thanks! does anyone else know of any other ways to improve gas mileage?
Explr1 10-12-2005, 10:21 AM I'm getting lousy gas mileage.
What are you getting? I get 22 to 24 mpg driving around town with my Injen/cold air extention. When I go to Gloucester/Boston I get 34 mpg.

What did you get before the CAI?
Bjornboy81 10-12-2005, 11:13 AM Be carefull with CAI, in cold weather you can actually lose gas milage because of it. You're sucking in colder, denser air which means you will be injecting more full to accomidate. I'm switching back to a WAI for the winter because I've lost about 4mpg now that the temp is down in the 50's.
As for the other product, I think all it is, is a capacitor... in a new vehicle (or any vehicle really) it won't do anything unless you have electrical problems, which you would want to get fixed anyways. :)
The best way to save gas is keep the rpms down on acceleration and keep it under 70ish on the freeway.
Hambone 10-12-2005, 11:59 AM How bad is your mpg Irish?
Explr1 10-12-2005, 12:26 PM What did you get before the CAI?
With the stock intake and K&N filter it was anywhere from 19 to 23 in the city depending on if I ran the AC and driving conditions. Highway the highest I got was 32 with the cruise control set at 70.
lrish 10-12-2005, 01:29 PM apparently i was wrong before, im getting a constant 19 miles a gallon. that still stinks if you ask me. i read reviews of this thing getting close to 30 and 34 highway.

19 in a city like Jersey/NYC is normal. Thats what I got during a week in Boston. Try resetting your fuel milage read out by holding the enter button for a few seconds before your next highway trip. If you do it while in the city, it will take for ever to read right. You should get 32 to 34 mpg on the highway.
G6Action 10-12-2005, 06:30 PM wow, being an old man must be paying off!!!!
i'm getting IN TOWN 25.6, consistantly AND with the A/C on. had it out on the highway a couple of times, but never really thought to check it.
this past weekend i modified my air intake tube and removed the bottom resonator. my gas mileage since has been "only" 24 to 24.2, but i've had my 'foot in it' alot to see if i actually 'hear a difference'. answer to that question; NO.
but then i am old and maybe deaf too.....
one other thing. after the 'mod', i went out and from about 20 mph, i floored it. it actually 'chirped' the tires!!!!! or at least i thought until i read the thread about the 'serpentine belt squeal' on hard acceleration........i'm soooo disappointed!!!!! :(
Robyn P 10-13-2005, 06:46 AM I checked my information center yesterday and I get 25.4 mpg and this is all city driving. It said my average speed was like 24mph. While I was in Reno for a week my husband drove the G6 back and forth to work (about 90 miles roundtrip each day) and it got about 30 mpg and that's with his give it all it's got driving. This is why he only gets to drive the G6 when I'm out of town. The gas mileage was great compared to his Silverado. He put one tank of gas in it for the week, which at that time was about $35 verses putting 2 tanks in his per week at the cost of about $50 per tank. We could save money with him driving my car, but I just can't do it!! :D
G6Action 10-13-2005, 05:08 PM all right!!!! i'm NOT the only person getting decent gas mileage.......i was thinking that something was wrong with my information center!!!!
actually, now that robyn has mentioned it, my 'city driving' average speed is 37 so i guess i drive a little faster after all. but still good. mostly 30 mph speed limits on my streets, but i do have about a mile stretch on the way to work that i can really 'wind it out' to 50MPH!!!!! woo hoo........must be why a 37mph averege.
guess you guys are really "drivin' 'er hard and puttin' 'er up wet", huh?
Githianki 10-14-2005, 05:09 AM So far two tanks of gas, averageing 28-30 a gallon. Pretty even mix of city/highway driving.
Hambone 10-14-2005, 07:20 AM The woman gets 28.5 back and forth to work, 16 miles each way.

It's been pouring rain for the last week. I've rarely gone over 45 and noticed my mpg has gone up to 25.2.
GTPGuy82 10-15-2005, 06:11 PM My LCD readout says 15.4 ... how reliable is this thing?
Mike
e2helper 10-15-2005, 06:36 PM When I was driving a GTP auto trans for a while I averaged 18-19 MPG but I have a heavy foot - maybe yours is heavier :P

Drive at a constant speed down the highway for about an hour. After that it will read right. When my car was new, or I reset it and drove in the city it took weeks to read right.
The fuel milage readout figures the milage from the reset point til the present time. It figures all the time the vehicle is started. So if you are sitting still for 15 minutes waiting for your wife to get out of the store, you are getting 0 MPG for that time period. After you leave it on for 4-5 tanks of fuel, it seems like it takes forever to change, no matter what you do, as it should. Mine seems to average around 28-29 over several tanks of fuel. The one time i actually calculated the milage over a 400+ mile trip, car said 33.4 MPG, actual calculated MPG was 32.8, so it is pretty close.

I actually managed a 38.6 on my way to Davenport from Clinton... Reset for Highway only and cruise set at 60mph the entire way (55 zones).. Was pretty impressed... Does anyone know if the CAI makes a big difference on these? The intake design sucks or Im sure we could see a big gain here.

When I first brought my car home I was averaging 16mpg no matter what I did...saw about 24mpg on the highway. Its gotten MUCH better recently. Of course I had to have the factory belt replaced and when I got it back it was miraculously more responsive and idle was smooth (it was really jerky at idle). Dealer claims they didnt touch the Computer..so who knows. Maybe it takes some miles?
GTPGuy82 10-17-2005, 11:46 PM Well it's actually been up to around 18 at one point, then out of nowhere in the past 2 weeks it just dropped down to 15.4. There's about 1500 miles on it.
Mike
S8ER99 10-18-2005, 03:14 PM Just FYI.. my camaro got 26mpg on the interstate one time... the rest of its lifetime was spent around the 10mpg range ;) Im sure if I had a GTP my MPG would be in the toilet as well.
LOL
branderson 10-22-2005, 11:23 AM I'm getting good gas mileage like a lot of other people have said. ARound town the read out is usually around 25, I think the average speed was around 22mph, and I usually shut the car off if I'm jsut sitting somewhere. Highway depends but its usually no lower than 32. Most of the time I get around 35. The highest I've had is 36.8 on a highway trip. Once you get above about 65-70 in this car you can tell that drag really starts to lower it. I've played around with it alot and 60 seems to be about the ideal speed for gas mileage.
Are you heavy on the gas? I know when I like to drive the piss out of mine I can watch the gas gauge go down and the mileage with it. If you are used to driving a 4 cylinder the V6 is going to be a lot different as it sucks down more gas when you drive it hard.
bigbengt67 10-23-2005, 07:52 PM I do about 23 city if I drive like an old woman and use the manual shift mode to bump it up right away. On just highway driving at 75 MPH I consistently get 32. After about 3,000 miles I started geting consistent results. Now I'm at 14,000 and the mileage varies litle from tank to tank.
And like other people have said, always reset it from tank to tank to see the real results.
Redsun_ty 10-24-2005, 09:43 AM Wow....you guys getting very good mileage with your G6 I drive mostly 80%highways and 20% city and I'm getting around 9.2 L/100km I think that translate to around 24 mpg the best I ever got was 8.4 L/100km that is around 26 mpg. I don't know why is that low maybe because of the traffic on highways stop and go on top of that my G6 is not a V6. :(
