came across this today::

GM Acknowledges Power Steering Problem On Cars
48 Percent Of Steering Complaints Filed Are For GM Cars

Forty-eight percent of steering complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are for GM cars.

More than a million cars made by General Motors on the road right now can potentially lose power steering. There have been accidents and injuries because of it. CBS 2 Investigator Dave Savini looked into the problem months ago. Now, GM is finally taking action.

Beverly Sinkular owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. She says the power steering repeatedly fails. One time, her granddaughter was in the car when she lost control of the wheel and was nearly in an accident.

"I was struggling with it," she said.

That is when she began having serious concerns that her power steering malfunction might happen to other Pontiac G6 owners. She was right.

CBS 2's investigative team uncovered hundreds of G6 owners with power steering failures. We discovered that 439 steering complaints involving the 2006 Pontiac G6 have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The reports were filled with complaints of repeated power steering failures; drivers losing control of their vehicles; accidents, and even injuries.

Owners complain the car is dangerous, repair costs are not being covered, and they say a recall is needed.

"It's just a horrible thing for anyone to have to go through," Sinkular said.

When CBS 2 showed Sinkular the giant pile of G6 complaints, she asked, "Why isn't Pontiac doing something about it?"

Before contacting CBS 2, Sinkular says she went to her dealership and was told her power steering malfunction was an isolated failure. She was forced to pay $630 to get it fixed.

"They told me that it wasn't a recall and I was no longer under warranty, so therefore, it's my bill," she said.

Sinkular thinks there may be more G6 model years affected. Her neighbor has experienced similar problems, except with his 2009 model. The man, who does not want to be identified, says his power steering has not gone out yet, but the warning light goes off intermittently.

When asked if she believed an investigation was warranted, Sinkular responded, "Absolutely."

CBS 2 contacted GM about Sinkular's case, as well as the hundreds of other complaints we found.

A spokesman acknowledged that there have been steering problems since the company switched from a hydraulic to an electric system, and admits that 48 percent of steering complaints filed with NHTSA are for GM cars.

The GM spokesman also said there is no safety issue because the cars can be controlled during power steering failures.

However, to satisfy customers, they are extending the warranty on 1.1 million cars, so if the power steering fails, the repair costs will be covered. Letters to vehicle owners are being mailed by GM.

In Sinkular's case, GM refunded her repair cost, but she is still concerned.

"I'm afraid that there's going to be a terrible, terrible accident with it," she said.

The extended warranties will cover the 2005, 2006 and 2008 models of the Pontiac G6, Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx; the 2008 Saturn Aura and the 2004-2007 Saturn ION.

The previous safety recall from February 2010 covers the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2007-2010 Pontiac G5; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada), and 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 (Mexico).

I never notified them that I bought the car used so didn't get the letter. However, still good to know that it's good for another 5 years in case it decides to go.

so if we bought the car used from a dealership we won't be getting the letter? and if we don't get the letter are we still covered?

If you bought the car used from the GM dealership I would think that should get the letter. I bought mine from Carmax and they gave me a number to call to let Pontiac know that I bought the car so they could inform me when they have recalls like this. I just never bothered to call. If you don't get the letter you should be covered, but it would be nice to have if the dealer gives you grief.

From the way the letter reads, this is only for the 2005 model year, am I correct?

Took mine in today and they are keeping it for 3-5 days. They told me the steering column and computer are bad...go GM. Now if they'll just fix the locked up AC compressor.

Called the dealer. They said $99 diagnostic fee which will be waived if that particular sensor is the problem. He said there are 4 sensors that control this particular problem. The computer stores the "error" codes for this problem and they will check it out 9-2-2010 when I bring it in. I hope the covered sensor is the defective one.
2006 sedan 4 cyl. I have had repeated (daily almost) problems with the power steering lately. Shut the car off/on several times and tug on the steering wheel, finally breaks free.

There are no symptoms (sucks). Just locks and "power steering" (no kidding!) comes on the radio w/chime. All or nothing. You can still drive with major arm workout.

It can happen while your driving, when you first get in the car and turn the key or even if you leave it warming up and come back out.

There is a in between syndrome you might keep an eye on.

Sometimes the car will pull to the left if you let go of the wheel and steer much easier to the left and much harder to the right but it is not enough to trip the radio warning, and when you shut the car off, the steering wheel will spin a 1/4 to 1/2 turn by it self rather than just doing nothing like it's supposed to. You may have this condition as an early warning of a potential problem or it may just happen in between its full lock out fits.

Right now with me it's like russian roulette everytime I turn the key and even if it starts ok it could happen three times on the way to work or be fine all day. This crap should have been addressed long ago.

It's in the shop as I write this and we will see how it goes. At least I can assume that Pontiac has determined the proper fix as many people have encountered the shotgun method by mechanics due to no accurate info from the factory. I couldn't bring it in before because they would have to keep/drive the car until it appeared and once shut off and restarted it could be fine for a week then happen 4 times a day. I was hoping the damn part would just fail, then they would know what to fix.

We shall see. I would like to track down the part#'s to double check their work if they say it is a sensor that is not covered I want the part back. Good luck

They said that it could be one of 4 sensors and the extended warranty only covered a certain sensor. If it was not that one I would be responsible for the repair. So, if I knew what the correct part was I could compare it to the replaced part to see if they were ripping me off. As it turned out the torque sensor was the failing part and the one covered by the extended warranty bulliten. They had to order the part and and everything is no-charge when they fix it. You would think they would have some of these in stock based on the Company telling people to bring them in but since they are paying I can wait two more weeks. Then see how this actually turns out.

so the torque sensor was covered by the new power steering recall? and that was it

Ironically I got the letter the same day this week my car repair was finished for this issue. I lost power steering while driving and after researching, the shop found out there was a TSB covering it. Parts took a while to get, and I suspect they can't keep up production of them. The letter basically says don't do anything unless you loose steering. Unbelievable. It about scared me to death when it happened!

Strange thing though. The dealership repeatedly mentioned that this was NOT a recall rather an extended warranty for this problem only. Is there a legal issue here?? Corporate doublespeak to me:beer:

i think they say its an extended warranty instead of a recall because they'll only fix it up to 100k or 10 years from your model if and only if it fails...recalls usually imply a problem with a part that can be brought it to be replaced whenever said problem is brought to your attention. at least thats my take on the two

I am looking at buying a 2006 G6 Coup for my daughter. Does this extension cover 2006 also? The letter shown says 2005. Did 2006 owners get a letter saying 2006?

I also got this STEERING notice in the mail about a month ago. Its not just for 2005's mine is a 2006. I knock on wood no steering issues with mine just one little thing I noticed when turing the steering wheel into a turn or when finishing a turn the steering wheel wants to slightly tighten? Also have had my I-Steering shaft replaced a few months ago to fix the thud noise. Also have had my throttle body cleaned out too prevent the starter from over cranking on hot starts.

Got my letter a few weeks ago, no problems, filed it in the cabinet.

Last two days, everytime I start the car DIC shows "Power steering" and check engine light comes on. First couple of times it went off, today, stayed on all the way home.

I just got my recall letter today. Don't really have any problems with the steering though 'cept the clunk.

Spray white lithium grease into the intermediate shaft under the steering wheel. Take 30 seconds to do, clunk gone.

Repeat as needed.

I got the letter and I often have issues w/ my steering locking up in situations like parallel parking. The letter states/infers to only bring it in if you're having problems and the Power Steering warning light comes on. Today while going 55mp my Power Steering light came on, but my steering was ok... just driving a curvy 2 lane road. I was near the dealership, took it in, and they didn't know what I was talking about bc I was referring to the letter as a recall. But really it's a "notice," I suppose. GM is too cheap to own up to their problems and do a true recall on these cars. The issues have gotten ridiculous and it effects sooo many people. Anyway, they diagnosed the problem and saw that the light had indeed been on... so they ordered the new steering column and will be fixing it this week... GM is paying. There were really no issues, but I didn't have the letter, so the Service Manager called GM to get approval. Apparently it's around an $800 job, so if GM had not come through, I would have been on the phone all week w/ them to get this fixed.

Also, btw, if you have the issue w/ you car and already paid to get it fixed, the letter also included a reimbursement form.

No. its not a recall yet...but its just a special warranty. i took my car this morning to the GM or Saturn dealer and i gave them the VIN number and they pulled all the information of my car to the computer. the special warranty is free and it only took me like one hour for them to replace the power steering motor. it is free and i saw on the computer that the special warranty took effect on July 20th of this year. the invoice said A SPECIAL COVERAGE 10187, CAUSE: replace steering motor 22CVZ-016 Power Steering and F-Motor Kit.... 0.00 dollars

TSB for power steering IS NOT for all 2006 G6's. My power steering assist failed at 16,000 miles on our G6. My VIN was not part of TSB-10183 coverage. Dealer installed part for labor only after 5 days of my phone calls to GM "customer service". Can't find any reference to TSB-10187.

Called Pontiac. They are going to call the dealer on Monday since out here in the boonies the service dept is closed on Saturday. They also gave me the roadside service number since I can't even drive the thing to the dealer once I do get an appointment. It took forever just to get it back into the driveway after the steering went out. Im just glad I wasn't on the toll road with my son... so scary!
