: Wams Performance Tune
Waldron 08-25-2010, 01:36 PM Hello everyone.
Looking into performance parts and things I could add to my 2009 G6 GT.
Already in the process of getting a crabs intake and gonna work on a GT-R exhaust next.
I was looking at the wams 2007+ G6/Malibu/Aura 3.5 Performance Tune.
http://www.whiteautoandmedia.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=39&category_id=17&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54
I have a few questions about it. What does it do, is it easy to install? and how much HP/Torque is it going to give?
ralthoff 09-04-2010, 12:30 PM I'm thinking about the wams as well, I would like to see what people have to say here
Abyssul 09-04-2010, 02:16 PM Most of the tune is from changing the acceptance of octane levels and shifting points. A change from 87 to 91 octane will provide a 10HP increase. Tuning a 87 octane wouldn't be worth it.
EqualPotential 09-04-2010, 07:44 PM Is it better to get a new ecm/tcm and keep your old one or just send the old in
TinIndian 09-04-2010, 08:46 PM Is it better to get a new ecm/tcm and keep your old one or just send the old inIf the 6 is still under warranty, you should keep the OEM unit to put back in for warranty claims.
You can always sell the tuned unit and get your money back if you sell the 6.
EqualPotential 09-04-2010, 09:31 PM Alright thanks...my car only has the extended power train warranty. So wouldnt this and the crab intake void that warranty
Abyssul 09-04-2010, 10:53 PM CRAB's won't void that warranty, but a tune will.
EqualPotential 09-04-2010, 11:29 PM Alright got but with invisitune things should be ok?
Lampoon 09-05-2010, 05:14 AM Yes i recommend you get an extra PCM.
I did. now I can swap it at will.
I TOTALLY recommend Chris's tune. It woke up my G6!
Also yes you can sell it but it cant be reused without a rewrite on the tune to match the vin number so it can talk to the BCM/TCM correctly.
EqualPotential 09-05-2010, 09:47 AM Alright sounds like Im getting it soon then... Not sure what to get first though lol CRABS, WAMS TUNE, or GTR Exhaust ( the most expensive out of all )
Lampoon 09-05-2010, 10:27 AM I just read that the GT-R is currently sold out so if you go that route get on the list NOW.
Your tune will be better if they know you have an intake so you have to tell them that
you do. So if you get the tune before the intake hold off on the tune install (you will run lean) without the intake on. Clear as mud I know.... lol

I wish I could get to his shop!

So your saying if i got the tune before i got the intake..then got the intake the car would run lean. So its better just to get the tune after i get the intake
Abyssul 09-05-2010, 12:28 PM Do all the engine modifications before you get the tune. I have the intake and plan on getting the GT-R (on the list now) before I get the tune. That way WAMS can compensate for those when they tune the settings. The intakes and exhaust really affect the optimal settings.
Lampoon 09-05-2010, 06:16 PM x1....what he said. :p
Lead_Foot 09-05-2010, 06:44 PM does it matter what year/model pcm i should get to be tuned for my 2008 G6 GT
Abyssul 09-05-2010, 06:58 PM Yes. It is specific to your engine size and year and maybe transmission type.
EqualPotential 09-05-2010, 11:19 PM Lol alright well im on the waiting list for the GT-R exhaust and waiting on Lampoon to get the FPU so I can get CRABS :D
ralthoff 09-06-2010, 05:24 PM Any educated guesses where I would be sitting HP wise on my GXP with the WAMS on top of the Crabs? (I would say plugs, but I doubt they do much besides throttle response)
Abyssul 09-06-2010, 05:48 PM Any educated guesses where I would be sitting HP wise on my GXP with the WAMS on top of the Crabs? (I would say plugs, but I doubt they do much besides throttle response)
93 Octane tune with Crabs would increase the HP by 20 I would estimate at the most.
ralthoff 09-06-2010, 06:50 PM I don't think any stations in Omaha sell 93 octane. Think it's worth it?
Abyssul 09-06-2010, 07:08 PM The tune is still amazing at 91 octane. Just not as strong of a HP increase. I can't believe you don't have 93 octane.
ralthoff 09-06-2010, 07:22 PM Omaha doesn't have anything besides crappy weather and nothing to do.
ralthoff 09-06-2010, 07:42 PM And is it worth $450 for 20 hp?
Abyssul 09-06-2010, 08:23 PM And is it worth $450 for 20 hp?
Its a new PCM so you can switch them out at anytime. That way you can send your car to the dealer without them suspecting a tune which voids your warranty.
Also, the tune will take advantage of any other modifications you've done like the GT-R exhaust or CRABs.
GTPprix 09-07-2010, 07:48 AM Thanks for the feedback and kind words guys :)
Lampoon 09-07-2010, 08:00 AM Doesnt Omaha have insurance and steaks?? :p
Abyssul 09-07-2010, 08:53 AM Thanks for the feedback and kind words guys :)
If you sell a awesome product, then it would basically sell itself, right? :)
GTPprix 09-07-2010, 01:06 PM True but its ALWAYS nice to hear it :)
ralthoff 09-07-2010, 07:24 PM I went to the website and priced a new ecu and it came out to about 450 with invisitune... Chris - what say you, sir?
Thanks guys.
Abyssul 09-07-2010, 07:52 PM I went to the website and priced a new ecu and it came out to about 450 with invisitune... Chris - what say you, sir?
Thanks guys.
Oh crap. I did my addition wrong. It would be about $425. I asked Chris if there could be a member discount through email, but I never got a reply.
Lampoon 09-08-2010, 04:55 AM Come on Chris....dont POON them!!
Give em THE SUPER OOBER DISCOUNT!!!
Bambamm 09-08-2010, 02:11 PM The final thing on my list is my WAMS Tune!
ralthoff 09-12-2010, 10:13 AM So what's the word on the super oober discount?
GTPprix 09-12-2010, 04:52 PM So what's the word on the super oober discount?
The discount is its $50 lower than closest competitor for a better product and brand new GM ECM/TCM's at about 1/5th of GM retail.
ralthoff 09-12-2010, 07:16 PM Aha, touché sir.
EqualPotential 09-12-2010, 09:49 PM Lol :agree:
SmokeyPSA 09-24-2010, 09:03 PM OK guys. At the risk of sounding like a noob, what else needs to be change when dropping a WAMs in my 6? I run on regular 87 right now. Do I just drop it in and start running on 93 at that point? Anything else special I need to do?
BensG6GTP 09-25-2010, 12:59 PM Fromwhat I've heard and seen, I don't think anything else has to be done. Except the change in fuel.
G6-Lover 09-25-2010, 01:57 PM Agreed you'll need to run a higher octane fuel
SmokeyPSA 10-08-2010, 10:24 AM On the site / Delivery Option....does that mean I either send in my current PCM to him and have no running car till I get it back, or obviously buy a new one out right? Just checking to make sure Im understanding correctly. I dont have another vehicle.
Plus, what is the "Vehicle Modification" for? Am I supposed to list what Ive done already? will that affect the program of the PCM?
waterfowler76 10-08-2010, 10:54 AM your right on both accounts
SmokeyPSA 10-08-2010, 01:23 PM Do you think they would let me buy one outright for full price and then send in my old one once it has been swapped for a small refund? Do you know the contact on here, to ask directly?

We dont do that for a few reasons but the major one being we offer new ECM/TCM's for about 1/5th of GM retail so everyone gets them so they have something to sell if they ever sell their vehicle. Also since we only stock new units a core program makes no sense :)
SmokeyPSA 10-08-2010, 05:02 PM Well thats that then. Thank you. Looking to grab a 93 Octane. I dont have any mods yet but have a list. All soon to come. In your opinion should I wait? Doing CRABs, Magna exhaust, being the majors right now.
Also, do you know of any other worth-while performance mods?

Not for the v6's

Really no need to wait the only thing that will affect the tune is the CRAB which we will set it up for no sweat. I'd recommend the GTR exhaust though IMHO :)
SmokeyPSA 10-09-2010, 01:26 PM I was thinking about it. The body kit im looking at, I can get it in dual exhaust. But it costs so much more. I have yet to hear it also. The only down side to the GT-R is that the pipes stick out too far, to me. I like it when they barely pass the rim of the fender. Know what I mean.
SmokeyPSA 10-09-2010, 06:34 PM Well.......Now that thats over. Chris, how much would a 93 octane, programmed for crabs/tiger crab, run me out right, no swap???
Oh to 76542!
jpbales 10-09-2010, 06:58 PM from what I've read here:
http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/2004-2007-cadillac-cts-v-general/137970-gm-bulletin-states-aftermarket-pcm-tune.html
GM supposedly CAN tell if you've swapped out the ECM/PCM in your car and this is grounds for them to void your powertrain warranty. So if I were you, and still have a powertrain warranty (or any warranty for that matter), I would be very cautious about getting a tune. Just my opinion though.

Thats an easy one simply add the item to your cart and click checkout, it will give you the total for whatever choices you made and various shipping options :)

On the older cars its a little more difficult however this is the reason for invisitune and the new ECM/TCM setup since it is a valid concern. The new ECM/TCM is perfect though since you keep your original factory matched units factory :)
Lampoon 10-10-2010, 04:42 AM Thread cleaned up...

The GT-R was designed to be adjusted. Some people like it to stick out more than others. If you look around, you will find some that don't stick out at all. The closer the outlet is to the opening, the more likelihood that you will melt the lower valance as they are not that thick, especially if you do any prolong highway speeds.
Lampoon 10-10-2010, 08:34 AM I need to drive up there and let you help me adjust mine. I had it perfect one time then I messed it up and cant get it right perfect again. I just suck at exhaust alignment.
I actually paid a guy $40 to help me with Barricade cause I was off by 1/2" and Im just crazy about small stuff like that. I spent hours trying to readjust it and couldnt get it right. He spent 10 min and fixed it. AARRGGGGGGGGG
thats my Achilles heel.
Most of the adjustment is at the pivot point on the muffler, where the muffler connects to the main pipe. Another place is where the center pipe connects the main pipe. Between those two locations a good amount of adjustment is possible.
DG1239 10-13-2010, 10:40 AM Hmm, so the exhaust doesn't effect the tune much? So if I were to get the tune now, since the exhaust is sold out, then later get the exhaust, it would not be any different than if I were to get the exhaust first, and tell Chris when he tunes my ECM that I have CRAB's and the GT-R system?
hndah8r 10-13-2010, 11:14 AM Yeah all you have to tell him is that you have a CAI. I have a custom 2.5" exhaust and all he was concerned about was my CAI.
After reading all of this, I will be getting my gtp tuned. Can't wait to drive it once it has been done!
CruisinG6 02-01-2012, 05:06 PM I had my 4cyl tuned. Love it! Made a huge difference IMO.
I do have one question, I live in Iowa some days in the winter it is COLD. Is the car still gonna start and run with this tune in the winter?
GTPprix 02-02-2012, 03:31 PM Yup it'll run just fine.
CruisinG6 02-02-2012, 05:06 PM I do have one question, I live in Iowa some days in the winter it is COLD. Is the car still gonna start and run with this tune in the winter?
If anything the COLD air will make it feel even better. Colder air is denser air, and therefore there's more oxygen molecules to mix with the high octane gas. all in all...more bang for your buck!
The only thing I like about winter is the Cold Air for performance, and all the sliding around I get to do... That is if there is snow...
