: Doors Unlock / Trunk Pops by itself...
jmberry 11-03-2004, 01:35 PM Hi Everyone,
I have an '05 GT with about 2,500 miles. Love it!
I recently went through a high-end carwash (not the gas station kind) and for the following 12-15 hours had a real problem.
While I was driving, the door locks would suddenly unlock themselves. Also, the trunk would pop, by itself.
These actions did not happen simultaniously, nor did they happen with any regularity.
One thing I did notice was that they would not happen much while I was just cruising down the highway, but rather happen when I accelerate or decelerate rapidly, but they also happened while the car was turned off - creating a real security problem in the NY metro area where I live.
Obviously, something got wet in the car wash, and fixed iteself (so-to-speak) once it dried out.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have gotten wet and where?
I spoke to my salesman about the problem and his only suggestion was to mention it to the service personnel when I bring in the car for its first service.
Thanks,
Jon Berry
Crackers 11-03-2004, 01:42 PM WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!
I had one in the strong rain this past weekend; no such problems! With ANY ca I would have it serviced immediately for this type of problem; electrical problems do not go away on their own.
Gimli 11-03-2004, 02:02 PM Unfortunately that's one of the downsides of getting a brand new model of car. Some issues like that (parts that get wet, etc.) will probably creep up every once in a while.
I'd say mention it to your service rep next time you see them and ask where the control box for the remote keyless entry is (on the Grand Am it was under the rear shelf, between the speakers, maybe worth a shot to see if it's still there). If it looks like it's in a water drainage area wrap it in a plastic bag or put some sort of deflector over it to keep water from making it's way in there.
vainot4u 11-03-2004, 08:55 PM Welcome to the club Jon...I have to agree with these two you should get it in for service...the bumper to bumper warranty should cover it. ;)
30thAnnGAGT 11-04-2004, 09:23 AM There's a component in the drivers side door that controls the electrical impulses to the trunk release and your door locks. It it my educated guess that it's the component that got wet when going through the wash. Very possibly even jossled depending on the strength of the brushes and what not against the door.
I would have that component inspected and even replaced. If it was water, you don't want corrosion issues.
sunrunner_pei 11-04-2004, 02:08 PM Excellent advice, everyone!
99grandamse 11-07-2004, 09:37 AM Neat ... I have to learn 'stuff' all over again  ... my first thought was water but I had no idea where to start looking LOL
S8ER99 11-07-2004, 07:30 PM Picked up silver 05, 38miles... does the same thing..any solutions? Im taking it in monday for final paper signing and im not pleased about this.
S8ER99 11-08-2004, 12:13 PM Goes in at 8am to be looked at. Anyone get this issue fixed yet??
s_h_o_r_t_yGA99 11-08-2004, 02:21 PM Hopefully it's a small fix, because having to jump out in the freezing cold to shut the trunk kinda sucks!
Gimli 11-08-2004, 02:27 PM If it's anything like the Grand Am there's a switch on the trunk latch assembly to disable the remote opening of the trunk while you guys are waiting to have this fixed ;)
S8ER99 11-08-2004, 11:11 PM Will definately let you all know :)
S8ER99 11-09-2004, 11:38 AM There is a GM Service Bulletin out for the new G6, they know about the locking/unlocking issue and until it is resolved the dealer is not supposed to attempt a fix on their own. I just have to live with it until they come up with a fix. :(
Thats the current information as of right now.
99grandamse 11-09-2004, 02:26 PM Interesting ... thanks!!!
sunrunner_pei 11-10-2004, 08:30 AM I wish I still had access to the TSBs. :(
S8ER99 11-11-2004, 12:00 PM That would be helpful. :)
By the way the truck disable thing is on the G6 as well. However there is a problem with that... what good is keeping the truck shut when the doors unlock themselves. :(
They need to figure something out quick..
99grandamse 11-11-2004, 03:57 PM I wish I still had access to the TSBs. :(
... I'm working on it ;)

Not sure how much truth there is yet..but apparently there is a fix. I will be contacting my dealer tomorrow for comformation/details.
Gimli 11-13-2004, 08:58 AM Please don't link away to other forums. We'd like to build our own knowledge base so we're not dependent on every other site out there for answers.
If you can please summarize the information on here. You're more than welcome to credit it to whoever wrote it ;)
S8ER99 11-13-2004, 04:07 PM I guess this is why the stang and Fbody comminuities have more resources available. I hope thats not how everyone here thinks we should be with things like this. Or I will certainly NOT contribute and make my info widely available elsewhere ;)
Old Guy 11-14-2004, 06:28 AM Here's what was said on the GAGT site.
"There is a fix. To make sure everyone gets it, Pontiac is actually doing a recall. The fix is to reprogram the computer, to shut off the auto lock from the key cylinder feature. Just make an appointment with your dealer to do the update."
That was easy! :)
e2helper 11-14-2004, 10:23 AM Hi,
Great to find a G6-specific forum!!! You can expect to see a lot of me here :)
I am probably not adding much but Old Guy is correct. The key cylinder switch in driver door latch was sending an incorrect signal to the body computer.
The body computer uses this input to enable/disable content theft system and do a central lock/unlocking of all doors. By cycling the switch to UNLOCK 3 times you would get a trunk pop command.
Dealer will disable all these functions with a calibration change to the body computer.
Things that owners need to keep in mind after this is done....
1. Now that key cylinder switch in door is disabled if you unlock doors using the key cylinder (and not use the remote keyless fob - which is standard feature) you will set the content theft system into a pre-alarm chirping and need to put key in ignition and turn on before the 10 second timer elapses and the full alarm mode occurs. Best to just unlock doors with key fob.
2. If you have the dealer fix vehicle and have the remote start option double-check to make sure it is still working and that the dealer didn't inadvertently disable that feature.
S8ER99 11-14-2004, 03:22 PM Hmm, while that info is welcome, and hopefully there is a fix, but It does not sound like the exact problem, as I have yet to use the 'key cylinder' and I strickly use the fob. Also the issue is random (difficult to troubleshoot) and related to the delay lock feature itself. Hmm..guess I will find out when they fix it.
Gimli 11-14-2004, 11:57 PM What I mean is that if their site goes down and gets rebuilt (as happens fairly often with most sites) then the information is lost. All we end up with are a bunch of invalid links and that helps nobody...
e2helper 11-15-2004, 05:00 AM It is the key cylinder and is related to water intrusion in latch which causes false indications of an activation of the switch.
S8ER99 11-15-2004, 11:03 AM Ok, makes more sense Gimli. I see what you mean...
as for the issue.. still havnt seen it (been pouring). Guess I just have to wait it out.
S8ER99 11-24-2004, 04:22 PM  Thank you E2Helper!!! You were 100% correct and I would like to publicly apologize for doubting you! The info was faxed to the dealer and they called me this morning..car goes in Friday for exactly what you said.
sunrunner_pei 11-25-2004, 07:36 AM Excellent!!! Glad to see that you got the help you needed.
E2Helper, great job!!!!
e2helper 11-25-2004, 08:01 AM Thx but I didn't actually get in touch with dealer in time so they must have found the campaign info on this issue themselves.
But I am always around to try to HELP where I can :)
BTW I pick up up my G6 GT lease vehicle next week (for the wife) :LOL
cyrrus 11-28-2004, 04:35 AM /great So this is what I have to look forward to... Sounds like lots of fun, especially since I live were there no snow but we get tons of rain here on the west coast.
S8ER99 12-01-2004, 05:04 PM It appears to be issolated honestly.. as the other 6 units the dealer had sold have reported no issues whatsoever. I just got the bad one on the lot. (Im the kind of person to win the lottery and then wash (or just lose) the winning ticket.)
It rained here for weeks straight, heavy rain.. and I had the incident pop up twice (both days it was not raining... Hmmm) and the day I picked it up was one of the warmest (dry day) on record. If it had to do with the rain itself I would think they would be doing more than just reprogramming the BCM ;) It may be a cause/reason for the issue to pop up... but I wouldn't assume that the weather is going to affect it directly.
e2helper 12-01-2004, 07:13 PM Sorry if redundant message :)
There is a campaign (recall) on this issue for all early built G6 to have this BCM reconfiguration performed. Owners should be receiving a letter from GM on this which I think might include updated owner manual pages.
BTW the G6 I am leasing has this recall open against it (I checked). Maybe I can get dealer to correct issue before I pick it up.
:LOL
Here is the title and number:
Customer Satisfaction Campaign - Driver Door Water Intrusion #04088 - (Nov 5, 2004)
S8ER99 12-01-2004, 09:02 PM At least you knew about the issue before hand. :) It catches you by suprise when it randomly starts doing its own thing. LOL
I received that recall. Instead of fixing the water trap or fixing the switches on the door locks they are disabling the feature. I called them back and I opened a work order with complaint. Pretty much I told them that they should be fixing the problem itself, not disabling features on the car.
S8ER99 01-03-2005, 03:37 PM Yeah..I never used the 'feature' anyways.. so it was all good :)
SBMG6GT 04-28-2005, 06:03 PM Yo!
I'm from Canada, I had the car recalled in Dec. (Purchased in October 04) Apparently the moisture and rain and stuff can get trapped in the door panel. That triggers the modules in the switch sometimes and it unlocks the doors...I just got the recall in the mail and then the next morning I got out and the trunk is popped - not open just popped.
I took it in and had something redone. I think they just masked the problem by turning that key function above off.
Any ways it went in for something else too...the Fog lights wouldn't turn on at one point so they fixed that....I almost got in a drove away when I noticed that the Auto start wouldn't work.....they fixed that and I think re introduced the other problem. The other night I came out and the trunk was popped again....ahghhh....back to the shop.
SBM
e2helper 04-28-2005, 09:17 PM Sounds like they need to slow down and read the instructions given to them for the campaign, SBMG6GT. Sorry to hear about the problems.
What the dealer is doing is changing configuration settings of the Body Control Module and likely inadvertently changed one. The Auto Start Inop is indicative of technician not following instructions as well.
