: Out of curiosity whos steering has locked
Carissa249 01-04-2006, 12:07 PM Hi everyone, out of curiosity Im wondering who all has had the steering lock up? If so, did you take it to the dealership? And what happened then? Im noticing alot of people are looking at the steering threads, but not replying. I read somewhere that a guy has 2 of the Oprah G6s and is now having this problem. His wife and daughter drive them...I wonder how the other 200+ G6s she gave away are doing?! :p
S8ER99 01-04-2006, 03:30 PM I have...complained... went about as far as the rattle in my dash they still can't seem to locate or fix.
bigbengt67 01-04-2006, 04:15 PM How many threads do we need on the same subject?
S8ER99 01-04-2006, 04:18 PM 4
Do we have too many? haha
Carissa249 01-04-2006, 05:09 PM well considering its a serious issue id say as many as it takes to inform those of how to take care of it or to get GM to do something about it before someone dies

Good point! as you know Carissa, i have had the same problem but only those two times, back in October i think.
i've decided to play the part of the 'Crash Test Dummy' and continue to drive mine until it is happening alot, like yours, or it causes me to have an accident, in which case i will, if still alive, be sure to get a 'NCP' deal (no car payment) on a new GTP or Grand Prix GXP.
as for complaints, i filed one on the NTSB Site and also have a case number with Pontiac Customer Assistance. i was going to file with the BBB, but since its not a big problem for me 'right now', i thought i would wait and see. hopefully i will still be alive to file at a later time. ha ha
Bob G 01-05-2006, 06:25 AM Carissa249 does have a good point but how about the Mod making a sticky on the subject and putting everything in one thread?
Robyn P 01-05-2006, 07:35 AM I notice it usually every morning when pulling out of the driveway, or any time the car is cold. I have not said anything b/c after dealing with Pontiac on this car and my 99 GA, I realize, what's the use? Anytime I have had a mechanical problem they can never seem to locate it and assume it must be normal. I've had a some other issues that I reported to Pontiac CS in July and have yet to see anything done about them. They just create a file and tell you no one else has had this problem. When I had the GA, I kept complaining about the brakes and all Pontiac CS did was send me a free Pontiac CD case and keychain, what a joke!!! It was a nice gester I guess, but it still didn't stop me from having to have the brake pads and rotors replaced every 3 months.
I have to go to the dealership sometime, if they ever get the fog light swith in, and I'll ask about it when I go, to see what they say. This dealership is a bigger one, it's one of those dealerships that has a owner that doesn't want anyone else to have a car lot (ie: the delearship has Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Chevroelt, GM, Buick, and Pontiac), so maybe they've seen more G6's than the previous Pontiac dealer. I'll let you know what they say. :o
S8ER99 01-05-2006, 11:19 AM Good Idea bob... I don't think there is a need for 800 seperate threads..but 1 single thread would prove more useful.
bigbengt67 01-06-2006, 08:07 PM Glad to see this important issue is organized in an informative and easy to use way now!
J9theCat 01-27-2006, 03:21 PM Yipes, I just purchased an 06 GT 6 cyl 4-door the day after Christmas 05 and I am appalled at what I am seeing here. Haven't stuck my nose under the hood since I drove it off the lot but I will tonight to see if I can find (oh, please please) a power steering fluid dipstick. Pretty sure I already know what I'll (not) find. I'll be jumpy at every bump and twich from now on. Hope I live to pay off my loan. Thankfully, no kids. Anybody in the Western US experiencing this?
Bob G 01-27-2006, 04:26 PM This appears to have only been a problem with some '05 sedans, to my knowledge there has been no problem with the '06 models at all.
Carissa249 01-29-2006, 11:55 AM Yay! I picked up my replacement! I love it!!!

I have the 06 V6 and my mom has the 06 GT, neither of which have steering problems. Another thing you wont find while looking under the hood is the dipstick for tranny fluid
Robyn P 02-01-2006, 08:36 PM Yay! I picked up my replacement! I love it!!!
Good for you Carissa! :) Maybe now you will feel safer. Congrats on getting done what you set out to do. You are very strong!! :)
J9theCat 02-01-2006, 10:01 PM Thanks, Bob G. Breathing easier. I'm outta here.
S8ER99 02-13-2006, 04:04 PM Steering issues on mine have been getting more audible.. clicking, popping, random locks... I believe I have something I can actually PROVE to my dealer. Maybe at least get it fixed. Now if they could fix the body flex issue I might enjoy the car again someday.
vette79 03-05-2006, 04:28 PM Funy that I don't see complaints on the NHTS complaint website.
All of you should fill a complaint at the next address:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/?CFID=1551781&CFTOKEN=78404010
I think that GM will get some major legal action and major recals if you keep on putting pressure on them

ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING........2 complaints
STEERING....................................6 complaints
STEERING COLUMN........................1 complaint
HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING..........2 complaints (apparently these people were unaware they had EPS or didn't see the separate heading for it)

Carissa249 03-23-2006, 05:58 PM Hi ya'll just checking in...seeing how everyones issues are going...Im happily driving my 06 GTP...love it...no complaints so far!! Let me know if I can help anyone out!
G6steering 04-09-2006, 09:54 AM STEEERING NIGHTMARE>
Have just found your postings and I realize that your issue is resolved, but I would appreciate any help in this matter. I'am today filing complaints at any sight we can find. Daughter owns 2005 Pontiac G6 16000 miles. First incident with car was when turning right while on hill, loud noise and popping then steering locked and she ran over curb. Took this car to the dealer they gave her rental, called her to pick up car said there was nothing wrong she must have hydroplaned( sp). Second time this happened she was in down town traffic when steering locked the car proceeded into on coming traffic. Luckily steering returned and she was spared a awful accident. Took back to dealership. Dealership called yesterday and told her to come in to pick up car. When she got there they told her they could find nothing wrong, That they had computer on board for her to take it and push a red button when the steering problem returned. (Hmmmm wonder if she was suppose to hit this button while trying to avoid accident or after the ambulance got there.). She told them she did not feel comfortable doing this she was scared to drive the car. They said well some one has to do it. She ask the head man in dept if they were telling her the car was safe to drive they said they could not tell her that. She refused to take the car.
Concerned mother
If this does not give me nightmares the other daughter also drives G6. Which a whole other set of problems.
vette79 04-09-2006, 11:46 AM Hello, I not an expert, but I think that there should be a thread for a registry where all owners with the steering problem could register their VIN, Name and State and email infos.
I think that Carissa249 suceeded to get her car changed if there is some paperwoek like a GM documents stating anything usefull it should be scanned and posted on that registry
If I ever get my GTP pucrchased back from GM I will crate a site and post all relative documents so that other owners will be able to use this documentation for their own cases.
But meanwhile a rigistery could help to put pressure on GM.
As I mentioned elsewhere, if I'm intelligent enough to find G6 forums en the WEB, GM is intelligent enough to do the same.
I'm very shure that all car manufacturors have employees who's job is to monitor all that written on their products.
The WEB and forums are quite recent and we have the possbilities to find informations that we could'nt 5/7 years ago.
Now GM and others also know that we share informations and I'm positively shure that some staff is monitering everything we write. And they are affraid of that information exchange. This is shurely why there are no complaints record anywhere, even though many of us did complaint. They are playing hide and seek.
Finaly if the idea of a registrery is feasable, there should by others for the Panoramic and the 6 speeder.
It would shurely be very interesting to find how many of us have a problem for those 3 situations.
As it is now, all the infos. is spread all around and no one can quantify the number of unsatisfied owners.
Thanks.
G6steering 04-11-2006, 03:18 PM Just an update. Daughter went back to dealership armed with complaints listed with NHTSA and ask them about them. They said there is no complaints listed, she then handed them a copy of the report. Well needless to say a GM rep was called who then asked for copies. Daughter was told to meet with him tomorrow at dealership. We will see what happens.
sunrunner_pei 04-12-2006, 09:10 AM I'd be willing to set up a registry... I think the only issue would be people willing to post their VIN#.

I've started work on this. I'll let you all know when the registry is online.
sherry 12-17-2006, 02:28 PM Hi , I'm new to this computers stuff , but my 2006 G6 power steering has gone out twice and locked up once. It has been repaired, and GUARANTEED to be fixed by an employee from GM out of Memphis, TN. He said that it was a sensor at the end of the streeing column and the power steering only went out at low speeds. Well he was wrong, it was not fixed and went out again at 50 mph. So your not alone, I know exactly what you are going through, and we have now contacted a lawyer.
I've got an 06 G6 -- steering problems began last September -- The steering would kind of "catch" when turning at times pulling the steering wheel right out of my hands. Every time it happened we called the dealership -- they said they hadn't heard of any such problem! When the car was left there and they started it up in the morning -- no problem. Finally last week the power steering went out completely -- like trying to turn a '52 Buick -- REALLY stiff! When it went out the info panel showed a power steering error message. Took it back in -- got it today -- the service order states
"Replace Steering Column Assembly" -- guess there really WAS something wrong with it and not just in my head!! Kind of afraid when driving now -- hope this fixed it -- we'll wait and see.
Perfect~Pontiac~G6 10-03-2007, 12:50 AM I got a 2005 Pontiac G6 last march, it was used, only 7900 miles,:confused:but it had all the extras and that awesome 4 split sunroof, i took it back to the dealership 3 times because the speaker buzzed, and finally they replaced it on the fourth time because they said they were tired of seeing my car in the shop. Other than that the steering is fine, the turning radius is a little short, Id like it to be a bit tighter on turns, and it does have a buzzing under the steering wheel, i figured it was just something loose under there, Id hate to have to take it back for something else.
