: Painted the mirrors today.
v6h.o. 01-09-2006, 06:08 PM Was slow at work today so I pulled the car into the shop and pulled the mirrors off the car. (have to pull the door panels due to the connector for the mirrors are behind it.) Havn't even had the car a week and started doing a few mods to it already. Usually not one for appearance mods, but something had to be done with those black mirrors.
Took them over to the bodyshop and had our painter spray them the body colour. Not the best pics due to the lighting in the shop, but you get the picture.

Also pulled the little square GM badges off the doors too... Just not digging them at all.

Looks heaps better with the mirrors painted to match. He had to add 3 extra coats of clear to make them look smooth due to the mirror plastic is rough textured. Said it was easier to just add more clear coat than to **** around sanding down the clear to get it smooth due to the roughness.
Blackrider 01-09-2006, 06:20 PM Looks good dood!
BTW I hate GM techs right now! Well all of them but you.
Robyn P 01-09-2006, 06:42 PM They do look good!!! :)
MIG6GTP 01-09-2006, 09:24 PM Much Much better. I need to speak to the dealership about having mine done. While I have the Granite color, the black mirrors do bother me.
GTPGuy82 01-09-2006, 11:22 PM I imagine a dealership would charge more than say, a regular bodyshop no?

Depends on how much their labour rate is. It should be reasonably close to the same.
It only cost me 20$ canadian to have them painted. But then again it was under the table and I'm buddies with the painter.
~niKKi~ 01-10-2006, 08:39 AM Wow looks much better!!!!

My mom is a dealer to and thats exactly what she said about the paint coming off because of the plastic. I asked about painting my mirrors a couple of days after i got my g6 and thats what she said to my disappointment.
Sully 03-08-2006, 06:49 PM I can't say I'm bothered by the black plastic mirrors so much that I'd paint them. But if GM makes some color-keyed ones in the future, like they did with the Cobalt, I'd probably swap mine out for a set of those bad boys.
branderson 03-09-2006, 12:51 PM Sort of like the ones the GTP was supposed to have? I have a brochure at home that shows the GTP with body colored mirrors that looked a lot like the Cobalts.
GTPGuy82 03-11-2006, 05:16 PM They look good, but I like the fact that they're not painted. Because if someone were to come too close and swipe your mirror, you won't have to worry about repainting it.

That would have been sweet if they actually put those on the finished product. :(
pontg6 03-22-2006, 10:14 AM That makes it look so much better!!!
ToniCipriani 03-23-2006, 12:37 PM I sort of want to paint the middle part only, like on the Malibu.
Too bad, I don't know anyone who has a body shop... sigh...
SwtGrndAmGT01 04-13-2006, 09:16 AM id love to paint mine, but not sure if Im keeping the car at the end of my lease yet, so im not going crazy with mods.
-+JoezDog4+- 07-08-2006, 10:29 PM not to bring suck an old post back, but has anyone else painted just the middle plastic??? I'd like to have that done and I want to get a view of how it would look...
Aodhhan 07-08-2006, 11:31 PM I agree it looks a lot better.
Whether the paint maintains will depend on how much the plastic expands/contracts with changing temperature. Since the plastic is hard and not very flexible, hopefully it will maintain its shape. The roughness increases the surface area for the base of the paint and should help as well.
Mirrors are most likely not painted since they are areas which get dinged by car doors, rocks and other debris as well as people scraping up against them in parking lots. My GTP is black, so the mirrors don't stick out as much as it would on other colors.
Please keep us informed. It's definitely a change to consider making.
tmurfet 07-09-2006, 11:26 AM There are plenty of companies that make custom door mirrors around. Maybe a group of owners should lobby one to make custom G6 mirrors.. ..painted with indicator strips perhaps..?
Cheers, Bean.
Big Joe 07-12-2006, 08:34 PM Painted mirrors really make a car look so much better.
Scamallite 07-23-2006, 03:51 PM The painted mirrors look REALLY good.
But i'd be concerned about the paint adhering to the plastic and possible chipping/peeling.
Interfire 07-23-2006, 07:26 PM I actually prefer mine non painted due to the chipping it would endure. As far as paint sticking it should no problem as long as it had good prep.
Blackrider 08-26-2006, 11:00 AM I saw v6h.o.'s car 2 nights ago, 8 months later and no problems....
BillyJack 03-06-2007, 08:53 PM not to bring suck an old post back, but has anyone else painted just the middle plastic??? I'd like to have that done and I want to get a view of how it would look...
I just bought a second pair of mirrors at the salvage yard to paint, trying to decide whether to paint the whole thing or just the middle. If I just paint the middle do I might paint the rest black so I can wax it and keep it shiny. I think painting the middle section is a more sporty look. Luckily I have a good paint guy for advice, he doesn't think the plastic will be a problem with proper prep. i.e. sanding, acetone, primer etc..
Somewhere I saw G6 mirrors with turn signals in them, they were more rounded.
Here's a pic of the middle section painted from the G6 GXP concept-

Good luck!
