: CD Changer
Anybody else out there with the in dash CD changer having any trouble with it? Every so often mine jams up, I can't eject, play, add, or change disks to it until it cools down for a while. I took it to the dealer and he offered to look at it sometime during the week, but I work 45 minutes away and can't get off work for something like this at the moment.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem with the factory cd changer in the G6.
S8ER99 11-17-2004, 04:28 PM Hmm..no issues with mine..I keep it playing constantly.. just like everything else..hit or miss item. I would keep CDs out of it until you get it replaced. :(
s_h_o_r_t_yGA99 11-17-2004, 09:05 PM Today as I had just gotten back into the car, started it up, (after being parked for maybe 20 minutes? already warmed up..) the CD player said "CD player error" and went to the radio, but when I hit source it played the CD's fine, maybe it was just tired and grumpy.. But that's the most of the CD player issues I've seen..
S8ER99 12-05-2004, 03:48 PM Just had the issue today you are talking about..I cranked on the A/C and after cooling down it worked again.. Something smelled like it was melting from the heater. (appears to be related to what vent setting you use..) Laura normally uses the vents that blow in your face and I use floor/defrost.. today I was using the same vents laura normally does and the problem popped right up. Dealer time again.
Nabil11 12-05-2004, 09:19 PM I haven't had any problems with mine.....yet...however, i've had the car for less than a week.
S8ER99 12-06-2004, 11:33 AM Thats what we get for buying brand new :) bound to be little bugs that need worked out. The more we relate to our dealers and GM the better off the future owners will be. :)
Nabil11 12-09-2004, 05:54 PM Well, I experienced this for the first time today. I must say I wasn't too pleased. Oh Well, it worked about 2 minutes later.
Old Guy 12-10-2004, 11:15 AM Just rip the dash apart and wrap some insulation around that nasty old vent duct!! :D
Or you could take it to the dealer and have them do something........that would probably be the better option. :p
e2helper 12-27-2004, 06:15 AM Dealers now have something available to them to address at least the loading and ejecting issue. Document for them to look up is #04111.
They reflash software in the radio.
S8ER99 12-27-2004, 02:22 PM YOU ROCK!! :) Did I ever tell you that?
e2helper 12-27-2004, 04:15 PM ;)
Only additional thing I have to say is a couple dealers have problems with reflash of radio software and subsequently require replacement of radio. This is likely an issue with the service tool. :(
G62005 02-25-2005, 02:55 PM This has happened to me once. It is nice to know there is a fix if I need it. Do you think this is a warranty issue.
S8ER99 03-15-2005, 08:11 PM Not sure..but the dealership is replacing mine no questions ask.. apparently they have something out there.. I doubt my dealership is that nice. LOL
ironmike 04-08-2005, 09:58 AM Yup! Just had that issue this morning Got in and the player froze right up couldnt do anything. Im in Buffalo and it got real cold over night(wonder if that had anything to do with it?), its started to work after the temp went up. Called the dealer this morning. taking it in first thing monday. will let you know what happens.
SBMG6GT 04-28-2005, 06:00 PM Had the same problem - Changer became unfunctional. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the whole unit! Haven't had a problem since!
SBMG6GT 05-03-2005, 10:27 AM I think I jinxed myself! This morning it got all jammed up again...now it's just cycling trying to load disc 1 - all I did was eject disc 6 and it got all screwed up!
Anyways took it in to the dealer on my way to the office and they are replacing it AGAIN! on Monday.
e2helper 05-03-2005, 06:05 PM This morning it got all jammed up again...now it's just cycling trying to load disc 1 - all I did was eject disc 6 and it got all screwed up!Are you using store bought CDs or burned?
SBMG6GT 05-03-2005, 06:09 PM Store bought at this time. Today I messed with it a little....it ejected 2 CD's at once???? I was kinda puzzled...
Since then though nothing has worked...it wont play the remaining 3 CD's. I finally got it to stop cycling...it kept trying to do something. Once it spit out the 2 CD's it stopped....
Ahn...we'll let the dealer replace it again....Actually my dealer told me this morning they are having problems with them. They aren't sure what can be done right now.
SBM.
nsanity 09-08-2005, 07:34 PM i have that problem when it is too hot OR too cold. i took it the dealer, they said they ccouldn't find anything wrong.
MHadden 09-08-2005, 09:10 PM Well, I did testing on these radios at my old job, and they definately jam up when operating in temps over 40C and below 0C...just beware, they also tend to scratch the discs at these temps when they are trying to change the discs...
RedG6 09-09-2005, 10:28 PM I've had my G6 3 weeks now, I absolutely love it to death other than 2 problems I had. Dealer replaced the CD player because of a jammed CD and I think the gas mileage could be a little better. I love the car, and everyone at work oooh's and ahhhh's over it too. Overall it's a much better car than the 04 Grand Am I replaced it with.
Bob G 09-13-2005, 06:38 PM Another victim of the 6 CD changer radio with XM. (UC6 & U2K) Between disc one and two changing I had opened the car door and now I can't eject, play or load a CD.
I have had some problems with the XM off and on where it wouldn't load the XM station unless I changed channels. Also when first starting the car on several occasions the message "Check DAB" would appear on the display. It just so happened that while in my car trying to get the disc to work someone from Pontiac called to see how I was liking my car. I told him that it was funny he called when he did. He advised me (naturally) to take the car into the dealership. Thinking he wouldn't have an answer for me but going to ask anyway, I asked about the "Check DAB" message and within 20 seconds :D he told me that stood for Digital Audio Band and that was probably triggered by the problems with the XM. So it looks like I will be getting the flashed software at the very least. I'm not overly upset about this as I had read the following quote from an earlier post. e2helper YOU ROCK!
Dealers now have something available to them to address at least the loading and ejecting issue. Document for them to look up is #04111. They reflash software in the radio.
I finished by telling him that I did indeed like my G6 and Pontiacs in general having owned them most of my adult life and my dealer has always been helpful and never let me down. I will let you all know how it goes.
e2helper 09-13-2005, 09:31 PM At this point though I believe there is a new radio with both updated software and hardware (supercedes last quoted post above).
Bob G 09-14-2005, 05:04 AM Hmm... sounds like a big design problem then... any idea if they will be sucessful in getting my CDs out? :o 2 are store bought, 3 are recorded (but with only "sharpie" pen labeling--no stick ons which I would never use btw.(never trusted that idea, and I know that has been a problem with many players)
Bob G 09-15-2005, 05:12 AM Well, left work early yesterday evening to get to the dealership as they told me they had to hook up the car to the computer. When I got in my car to take it, the CD issue had resolved itself, but having had the "check DAB" message on several occasions and the service mgr already expecting me...
Bottom line, I supposedly have the updated software, since the CD had cleared itself--nothing to do, and "check DAB" and occasional channel jumps on the XM after the car has sat a couple of days between driving the car, I was told to make a note if it was the same channel all the time or different channels that I last listened to compaired to what I find the channel to be when I drive the car the next time.
e2helper are you aware of anything that they (or I ) may have missed in trying to diagnose this? btw if its any help my VIN ends in 54157377
e2helper 09-15-2005, 09:58 PM So dealer just did something this week on this condition? If so I think they would have replaced radio based on your observations and available information they have.
Try this: Simultaneously press and release the "5", "seek up" and "DISP" buttons on your radio (it may take you a few times to get timing right). You should see "Rev Level __" come up on display. Then every second or so briefly press the DISP button to toggle to next value. This is displaying 3 pieces of information about the version of radio in your vehicle. The 2nd and 3rd ones of most interest. The last one is the part number of your radio (although you have to ignore the last 2 characters "DK" and then convert the remaining ones from hexadecimal to decimal (example: my radio reports 015A99B7(hex) = 22714807 (decimal). My radio is pretty old, the vehicle was built 3 months before yours.
Bob G 09-16-2005, 04:53 AM will try that this eve and report back my findings.. thanks.. Bob
Bob G 09-16-2005, 04:53 PM Ok, my display came up as:
REV 7
PROM ID: 5100
P/N: 00E897B4 K
which translates into 15243188 in decimal
there was no other character before the K
e2helper 09-16-2005, 06:13 PM OK,
I think your radio is one revision beyond mine. It is still not the latest, however.
So do you think your dealer did any update your radio yet? I wouldn't think so but I am not sure if reprogramming always updates part number reported.. If dealer has any question tell them to look at PIC3193D for condition you are describing on "check DAB". I think the latest part number is 15793377 for your radio - that document I mentioned might have a typo and indicate that P/N is for Canadian vehicles (but I don't think that is correct).
Bob G 09-16-2005, 06:55 PM doubtful, they probably checked it against whatever they have there. Only problem is that they are a part of a HUGE automotive group and are located in a town 12 miles from and about 1/3 the size of the corporate's city. The Chevy, Cadillac part of the group gets most of the attention from what I see.
The reason that I wonder if what they compared my radio to is up to date is that the part number or TSB number for the air deflector on the computer they check bulletins on was old and the parts dept. computer had a supersceded number.
I've been a big fan and owner of Pontiac cars most of my life and I hate to see the way this dealership is treated. I've never bought a car straight off the lot from them-- I have always either had to order or done a locator (very slim inventory). It's really a shame too, almost like they want them to fail. I think since the G6 was introduced they have only had 3 total from dealership order. So far no GTs or GTPs.
S8ER99 09-29-2005, 10:26 AM Not sure..but the dealership is replacing mine no questions ask.. apparently they have something out there.. I doubt my dealership is that nice. LOL
Just wanted to report back... No issues since they replaced the CD changer. The first few revisions must have been junk.
nsanity 10-10-2005, 02:46 PM jsut got mine back from the shop after a week, with a new radio on Friday. On Sunday I was having the same "frozen" disk player issues. I hate being without my baby, so i wonder if anyone can identify the specific problem causing the CD changer to malfuntion so that i can be more specific with my dealer's service center.
The Oracle 11-02-2005, 03:30 PM Within the last two weeks, I noticed a couple CDs actually skip while in play. I ran a brush cleaner & one of the two still skips... I had entertained the idea of taking it in while under warranty, but have yet to act on it. 'guess I'll wait 'til it repeats itself.
S8ER99 11-02-2005, 04:10 PM No issues with mine since it was replaced. I think they just go bad... poor quality? bad production run? who knows....
Robyn P 11-03-2005, 06:55 AM Mine was replaced as well and I have had no problems since, either.
golf_n_motorcycles 11-03-2005, 09:50 AM May or may not be related, but last week I had cause for concern with my CD changer. Car hadn't been parked long since my afternoon commute, when I needed to go pick up the little one at a friends.
Opened the driver door and heard "disc changing sounds" coming from the changer. Started it up, drove, everything played fine. On the way home we stopped by to fuel up. Helped my daughter in, went around and got in myself, and she tells me that when she got in the radio was making noises. I changed from one disc to the next, and she said "yeah, it sounded like that".
Hasn't done it since
S8ER99 11-03-2005, 10:33 AM Hmm.. no clue. But when it stops ejecting, changing disc, playing, etc ..then you need to get it replaced. Well that or if it says '666' on the display.
The Oracle 11-10-2005, 10:26 PM I took mine into the dealer today after a couple of days of intermittent skipping between self-recorded CDs & commercial CDs. They said they would check it out & if need be order me a new one & exchange them out. I got a call around 1600 (4pm) & they told me that they had a new one on it's way that should arrive early tomorrow morning. What ever happened to new cars not acting up until after the warranty period lapsed... Thankfully this switch-out is on GM's bill!
Bob G 11-12-2005, 09:33 AM Radio finally reared it ugly head enough so that the Service Manager could do something. It had occasional channel jumps on the XM but on Friday it jumped bands from XM1 to AM. He told me to bring it in and he would order a new head unit. I caught a look at the work order that the mechanic took to the parts window and it had written on it: B1325 Symptom 3 Device power/circuit voltage below threshold and he had jotted down on the work order my radio number (15243188) that e2helper showed us how to do on a page or two back.
 I just realized today is my cars 5th month with me....
Man the miles are racking up-- almost 1500 on her. :p
The Oracle 11-23-2005, 09:12 PM UPDATE: The CD changer switch-out went off without a hitch. I immediately plugged in one of the CDs that were giving me the problem & no more problem. Upon arriving home, I quickly went to upload some of my mp3s that I have burned off the web to see if maybe now they'd play. Lo & behold, they do! HURRAH!!! The clear plastic static protector stretched across the led readout had a label on it that read the date July 2005 on it. Perhaps the earlier models were from a prior stock that had issues...
:glasses3:

Are you saying your new radio plays MP3s?
S8ER99 11-25-2005, 02:08 PM CD changer has been replaced once before in mine...
2 nights ago it cooked itself again. Locked up, hot as hell.. would not turn off or on. Had to leave the car sit for a few hours in 18 degree weather before it finally started to work again. Time to see if I can buy the MP3 deck and pay the difference (I hope) :(
bigbengt67 12-08-2005, 10:05 PM Mine started acting retarded today, I was getting worried that I might have my first problem with the car. I got pissed and punched the mofo right in the display... started working right after I hit it! Its a cheap solution to the problem!
ragingfish 12-08-2005, 11:00 PM The 6 disc in our 05 sedan has been weird lately...two or three times it just stopped playing the CD and went to radio...but i could hit source and go back to the disc. but that *could* be that crazy traffic break in thing...but then twice it would just stop playing, go silent, and 3 seconds later start again. both times i was playing CD-R's, so that could play into it too.
S8ER99 12-09-2005, 06:53 AM I was told that by my dealer...but then I switched to all of my bought disc and the problem was worse when it locked up. (Most Burnable media these days is close to store bought disc anyways... lame excuse by anyone to blame that kind of media..and the dealership will do it the second you say something)
I had trouble with my 6 CD unit, it would lock up or eject CD's for no reason. I removed the radio fuse for 10 seconds and no problems since. I found the information on another forum. :)
S8ER99 12-09-2005, 11:09 AM Good info!! Need to keep that around..since my 'replaced' changer freezes now.
gtkuchma 12-09-2005, 03:17 PM My in-dash CD changer decided to quit working about a week ago, right after I had my car in for the Free Pontiac Customer Appreciation oil change.
I called and asked them what they can do...they said, you could come in sometime next week and we can yank the radio out and send it to GM under warranty, (DUH!?!) I said, if all you're doing is pulling the radio, I'll drop it off on Friday morning. I was told that they had to send mine back before they could get a replacement, as per GM policy.
My CD player would insert/eject the CD's just fine (burned or purchased), but would display "changing to CD 1" and play nothing.
Now I have a big hole in my dashboard until sometime this week when mine comes in...I have to call and make another appointment then to get it reinstalled.
My husband had the same problem with a single CD player in his Pontiac Vibe within the first 6 months of owning it.
problazer 12-10-2005, 01:33 AM My in-dash CD changer decided to quit working about a week ago, right after I had my car in for the Free Pontiac Customer Appreciation oil change.
That's odd. That's the same time I started having my problems http://www.g6ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=763 Had problems with the CD Player getting jammed when this happened to. Said it was trying to change to disc one, but sounded like gears were slipping inside the cd player or something. I wonder if the dealership purposely messed something up so they could get alittle revenue from warranty repairs. Cause you know even though its under warranty the dealership is still making some money off it. Just look what they charged GM for the problem I had.
Robyn P 12-10-2005, 09:31 AM I was told that they had to send mine back before they could get a replacement, as per GM policy.
This is not the truth!! (Go figure  ) I had a problem with mine. I took it in one day, they ordered a new radio, left the old one in, and then within 2 days I went back to the dealership and they took the old one out and put in the new one. They ran some tests on mine while I was at the dealership to see what I needed and then ordered a new one. I did not have to drive around without a radio, of course I've had some issues with this dealership while under previous owners, so they probably knew not to pull that with me b/c they know I will not hesitate to contact Pontiac, but it seems now days, Pontiac CS doesn't really give a crap about us anymore either. If you don't have good CS, you'll never survive, which could be part of the reason GM is in so much trouble, among the fact that they're now bascically giving their cars away and killing those of us that already have GM vehicles, which is why I will probably never own another GM vehicle.
bigbengt67 12-10-2005, 12:05 PM I'm telling you guys, if your changer acts up just hit it really hard and hopefully it will fix itself. Worked for me...
maykevin5 12-10-2008, 11:39 AM After reading about this. I try to keep just 1 disk in it at any point so the changer isn't moving around. I have XM anyway so I don't listen to cd's a whole lot.
