what does the middle number mean on tires

225 55 17 I know 17 means wheel diameter but what does the 55 mean on my tires. my last tires were 215 60 16. does that mean my 16 inch tires had a part that was bigger than my new tires I dont understand

the middle number is the profile of the tires. so yea, your 16 inch tires WERE bigger, but since you put on larger rims, it's likely they put on tires with a lower profile to keep the overall wheel diameter the same (which they do for safety reasons).
My 17s are 225/55R17, so don't worry too much about it.

I had the same question too. I'm in the market to buy new all seasons tires. I managed to find something on Wikipedia that might help.
