Wife's key sets off alarm

When my wife unlocks the car with her key (she doesnt have a key fob) the alarm goes off. I'm OK with that, but she isn't amused.

Any ideas? Sounds like something needs reprogrammed to me.

That is by design. Using the fob to lock the vehicle enables the theft deterrent system which can only be disabled using either the fob's unlock button or inserting a programmed key into the ignition switch. You can get a used GM fob on ebay but a dealer has to program it into the door lock receiver (for a fee).

It works this way because anyone who "borrows" your keys could make a key that will unlock the door (though not start the engine) so it's actually a good thing. For the car to "know" you are using a programmed key to unlock the door & thus disable the alarm there would have to be a key RFID receiver in the door which would add cost & complexity.

Thanks. I've had the car for 6 months, and it just started this week. When I bought the car it had 2 keys, and only 1 fob. I added crabs plus fpu and programmed new tpms with new wheels. Would either of those caused the change?

Looks like I'll have to fork over some cash. I was going to get a fob for my wife sooner or later. I guess I'll buy one sooner.

aerolot89: If your '08 works differently from this, I have no explanation.

from the 08 owners manual:

Arming the System
With the ignition off, you can arm the system by
pressing the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter
lock button.
The system will arm 30 seconds after all the doors are
closed, or 60 seconds with any door open.
If you press the lock button on the transmitter a second
time while all the doors are closed, the system will
arm immediately. The system will still arm in 60 seconds
if a door is open. When the open door is closed, the
system will arm.
The security light, located on the instrument panel
cluster, comes on to indicate that arming has been
initiated. Once the system is armed, the security light will
flash once every three seconds.
If the security light is flashing twice per second, this
means that a door is open.
If the system is armed and the key is used to unlock the
vehicle, the alarm will be activated.
If you do not want to arm the content theft system, lock
the vehicle with the manual lock knob on the doors
or with the inside power door lock switches.
The alarm will sound and the exterior lights will flash if
any door is opened while armed.

Disarming the System
To disarm the system, do one of the following:
• Press the RKE transmitter unlock button.
• Turn the ignition to ON/RUN.
If you want to lock the vehicle without arming the
content theft system, lock the vehicle with the manual
lock knob on the doors or with the inside power
door lock switches.
Once the system is disarmed, the security light will stop
flashing.

The TD system evolved over time. Yours works a bit differently as discussed in your owners manual.

Whats the point of having the car alarm go off if you unlock the door with your own key....better to sound the alarm in case someone is picking your locked door? Most people won't even go through the hassle of that and just break the window instead.

reread post #3. There's no key sensor in the door. The system has no idea if you are using a programmed key or not.

As long as they don't open the door the alarm won't activate. There's no window-breaking alarm system (though I wish there were).

Thanks greenman.

I'll do some troubleshooting this weekend and see what I come up with. I just realized I haven't ever tried my key to unlock the door. Maybe I'll try that too, and see what happens.

my wife has an 06 g5 and her key fob unlock button stopped working (havent got around to fixing it again) and when she unlocks with key it sets off her horn alarm until key is put into ignition. Greenman is right, it does this by design.

i've been having isues with my keyless/alarm and been looking into it. alot of people as well as the manual gives me the same info....but when i look on the wiring diagram from Mitchell, it shows a light green wire from the driver door latch going to the BCM named as driver dr key sw sig, so i'm kinda confused. it seems to mke as though using the key should disarm the system...unless locking the door with the key sets the alarm??? anyone know?
