Gas Gauge Fluctuation

I was sitting in my G6 at a stoplight and I was watching my gas gauge needle moving slightly between two tick marks. I know the gas gauge has been somewhat inaccurate since I have gotten the car.

I have asked about getting that sensor replaced, but after some research, the gas tank would have to be removed to do so. So F that.

I told somebody about this oddity and he tried to tell me it was the alternator. While I'm fairly car-savvy, I'm still hazy on the purpose of alternators and if that could cause needle movement for the gas gauge.

So, what do you think? A sensor thing or should I get my alternator checked?

Thanks in advance (:

It's not the alternator. Like every other sensor on the car it receives a constant 5v reference signal from the ECM. It's either the fuel level sensor or the IPC fuel gauge. Testing would be necessary to determine which. More often than not it's the sensor.
