Question 05 G6GT Steering Gear Replacement....

Hi All, Not too many problems with my G6 (Knocking on wood).

This week I felt a (how do I explain it) well it was like a thud in the steering when I turned either way...doesn't matter if I am driving or sitting still. Now when it was sitting still, I assumed it was the shifting of the rod from side to side. Then I noticed it when I was driving (Actually a buddy of mine riding in the passenger seat mentioned it).

Off to the dealer and I was told they need to replace the "Steering Gear". I'm not a mechanic or 100% car savy. I know my way around a car but couldn't take one apart and put it back together. Never heard of a steering gear before.

Well long story short....into the shop next week sometime....oh yeah while it's in they are replacing the mirror motor that died earlier.

Wish me luck - Hopefully this is the most of my troubles as the warranty runs out in 10,000 kms.

Anyone else had this problem?

My G6 had the same problem. The steering rack was replaced, but the problem came back after a few thousand miles.

Im on my second rack and soon to be 3rd. The first (stock) rack took about 14k to start going bad, the second one started clunking 2k after it was replaced and the third one Im waiting on hopefully to be replaced on Monday but the dealership is saying that GM is trying to make people wait untill the "new" design comes out

The power steering quit on my wife about a month ago--when she let go of the wheel, it turned left to the stops. It was towed to the dealer, the gear was replaced, and the car sent home. On the way home, my wife was driving down the street, and the steering locked. She ran off the road, and trashed the front right side of the car (she's ok). The product liability dept at GM is working on the situation, I should hear something by Thursday. If you've had steering issues, be careful. At least this didn't happen at 70mph.

Steering gear replacement

I just had the steering rack replaced on my '06 GTP coupe. I have about 34,000 miles on it in 14 months. I was hearing the thump from under the hood when turning the wheel at slow speeds, and at speed the car wandered from left to right, always having to make small corrections. Runs straight and true now, and hopefully this won't become a habit. good thing I got the extended warranty !

WOW!! Good food for thought gang! I wonder what mileages you ALL had this happen to you at? Mine is just over 9k with no problems to speak of. <knock on wood> This report doesn't necessarily bring out a lot of confidence in the G6. Do you ALL have GTs?
