Cooling Fan Woes

Hey all. New to the site, unfortunately my first post has to be one about car troubles.

We have an '05 G6 GT (3500) and are having issues with the cooling fans, in that they won't shut off. Either of them. The temperature gauge isn't working either The temperature has been hovering around the -35c mark for the last little while, so I've pulled both relays for the fans. Not like the car is going to over heat.

Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be? I'm hoping that it's just the coolant sensor, but I'm afraid we won't be able to pick one up until after the holidays.

More than likely your cooling fans are acting up because you temperature gauge is broken. The CPU may be set up so that any open circuit fails on an upscale burnout. That means if the temperature gauge or wire is broken the CPU thinks the car is running hot hence the fans continuous running.

Hmm I'm assuming the gauge is functioning cause it goes thru it's little test when you start it (needle shoots to max temperature & then drops back down)

I wonder if he may have pinched a wire when he pulled the dash to put in the remote start...

if there is something wrong with coolant temp the pcm goes into fail safe mode and runs the fan to minimize engine damage. scan for codes. if your temp is low the thermostat is probably stuck open.

If the thermostat was stuck open, wouldn't that mean there'd be no heat in the cabin?

I'm going to pick up a Black & Decker Smartscan as soon as I can get to the city. Unless there's another way to pull codes fom OBD II. I know my Camaro had OBD I & it was as easy as jumping terminal A & B

ya the coolant wouldnt get hot enough for your heater to blow warm air. onstar does give you a code but you gotta have onstar account. you would probably get a low temp reading code, i forget what it is. if there's no codes you might wanna check the outputs from the sensors, see what they read.

Yeah the car doesn't have onstar, let alone an account :S I guess I'll have to wait til I can pull the code.

Does Chiltons Or Haynes make a manual for the G6 Yet?

no idea, i always use gm's service manual. if you can get me a code i can check it when i get back to work.

All of a sudden the temp gauge is working again. Maybe it was an issue with the cold. The check engine light is still on though, Will get the code i the new year

well was finally able to pull the codes.

There are 2
first one was P0455 -- we took the car in for this one quite some time ago, turned out there's a leak in the evap line between the tank & the filler nozzle. The dealer wanted $800 to fix it so we told them where to go

Second is P0480 -- according to the smartscan website it's a cooling fan 1 control circuit malfunction & that Poor connection/wiring/electrical cooling fan motor/Powertrain Control Module could cause it.

I'm wondering if the temp sensor would be included in this?m I'm going to erase the codes & see if the second one retriggers
