Unless you have either a 91/93 tune or have a supercharger, or your car specifically recommends it, buying premium fuel is placebo. You want it to work better in your car and damn well you'll believe it even if it's a lie. No offense or anything. I've heard that using premium fuel on cars that aren't designed for it can actually cause more harm than good.
87 is perfectly fine for the G6, especially a base model, but this is just my humble opinion. But you might want to consider gas that has the extra detergent like Shell or whatever. But I firmly believe that premium fuel isn't a necessity.
