2005 g6 gt catyliac converter removal

Have a 05 g6 gt time to time i have to press gas to start after drive sits for a few. Im afraid going to leave me stranded. Had it hooked to computer says its both converters..thats around 500. 00 i fo t have to replace, money is tight.. i live in the country etc no worries about checks emmisions etc. Was told i get rid of them car wouldnt run right . Would mess it up.. question..... can i remove them just put a straight pipe replacement..any help greatly appreciated this is my only vehicle and i drive over 100 miles per day to work 😕
