Black smoke under hood when TC is ON

If we don't remember to turn traction control off with the button, black smoke starts to come out from under the hood.
No indication of any problems inside the car.
My wife said occasionally before this, there would be a "funny" noise from the front of the car and several lights including the abs and t/c lights would come on.
I noticed the problem of smoking when driving home in snow with T/C on.
No problems at all as long as T/C button is pressed before driving or if pressed immediately after smoking starts.
Everything seems to be worse in inclement weather....
It's a 2009 G6 4 door auto 6 cylinder with 190,000 miles.
Long time lurker, first time poster...
Any help is appreciated.
