2008 G6 3.5L Error on Odometer

Can anybody explain what exactly trips the odometer to display ERROR? What situation prompts this message? Is it only related to security and the key not being recognized? I have already checked all fuses, reseated cables on the PCM and BCM, verified good ground and 12V at the DLC, and verified I see low voltage signal on the Signal pins at the DLC. My OBD scanner powers up when plugging in but cannot communicate to any device, including the BCM and what it is calling Gateway 1?

I found this schematic for the GM High Speed LAN for the Pontiac G6 (not sure what other models this covers) . Using this I was able to isolate and repair a cut wire between the Electronic Brake Control Module and the Transmission Control Module. Hope this helps the next guy out, I worked on this damned car for two months before finding this info.
