Convertible "Top Not Secure"

I have a 2006 GT Hardtop Convertible. I've only had it for about 2 months and the top has been working fine. I haven't used it regularly because of the crazy spring weather. Anyway, it was a beautiful day yesterday so I put the top down. I hit the button and the top went down just fine. When I hit the button for the top to come back up, it came up just fine as well. Normally after it has closed the whole way, it beeps saying that everything is well and the top is secure. Instead of this happening, the motor just keeps running and then it beeps with "top not secure" message. I tried putting the top down again, which it did just fine. Once again when I put it up, it acts like everything is fine but I get the not secure message.

It's raining today and there aren't any leaks inside the car. From all accounts it seems like the top is on securely and fine, but I'm still getting the message. I can't open my trunk either because the car thinks the top isn't secure. When I hit the button to try to close the top (even though it's already closed), the motor runs but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Well that stinks! Sounds like a sensor is detecting something not there. We did have something similar happen once where it stopped in the middle of the top going down, and I had to put it back up all the way, shut the car off, restart and then it worked OK. I take it you've had the car off during this time and it's still doing it? Is it by chance still under warranty?

Ha - guess what? I've now got your exact problem

Here's hoping it magically fixes itself overnight but I'm guessing a trip to the dealer is in order :(

How long did it take to get the part, and is everything OK now?

Well Konner Chevrolet was nice enough to look at the car this morning. Said it was a switch of some sort; sorry don't remember the exact name. Naturally it needs to be ordered and should be in by Tuesday. Will of course further update then ;)

No, is out of warranty since jan. I have the car for 3 years now and I read the manual several times in order to do it right and avoid damage the system. When you remove the to with the off engine the only one who suffer is the battery. That why is highly recommended do it with engine on. This problem been happen for long time and the dealer just gave me vogues excuses. I think that the problem can be the hydraulic pump. My problem is how to change it and where can get the system diagrams.

Add another G6 to the "Top Not Secure" malfunction. It did it for the first time tonight (along with a TOP TOO HOT message from reversing it).
Seems that the trunk lid to hinge clamps are not engaging or not reading as engaged by the sensors. Hard to tell as the trunk lid looks like it could be in place yet I can't open the trunk (apparently it disables the release when this happens) to see if the arms are engaged.

I guess it's off to the dealer to get this fixed. Hopefully the company that I bought my extended warrantee from is still in business....

If anyone has any updates please post them so we know what to expect on this failure (which appears to be affecting a few cars now).

Thanks!

Interesting with the TOP TOO HOT message - I've been opening & closing the top like normal while waiting for the part to arrive and on Friday and Sunday the trunk would not open initially after being out in the 90* weather. The 2nd time it did open but kinda "sprang" up like it was stuck and suddenly pulled itself free  I'm definitely planning to mention this when I take it in to get the initial problem fixed.

Oh and FWIW I did not get the TOP TOO HOT message; guess it was too busy telling me it wasn't secure

Took a few minutes to get the "Top Too Hot" message, I'm guessing it was a combination of sticking latches and 2 full up and down cycles that overheated the hydraulic pump motor. I don't have time to play around with it at the moment as I am in the middle of a house move, wish i did have time.

My poor broken G6 has been at the dealer since early Thursday morning, they still have no clue what is causing the "top not secure" message. Now they think it is a wiring issue but they don't know where.
Does anyone know if there is an escalation procedure that gets specialists at GM involved after a certain time or does the same tech at the dealership stare at the car until it gets fixed?

The only good news I have received so far is that the warrantee company they sold to me when I bought the car used is still in business..
I'm supposed to go on vacation Friday, I sure hope it is done by then...

Training

Keeping in mind…..these verts are rare and loosing the Pontiac Dealers meant loosing some top qualified Mech’s familiar with issues related to the top. Mech needs Tech2 scanner and a HOURS of training on the top operation! Many bulletins AND video! The FTC (Folding Tops dedicated computer) WILL store and adv issues.

Well had it at the dealer today and they replaced the switch but also found through a phone call to technical that they have to replace a rod as well (could well be the "striker arm" mentioned above; I had called them from the road in my styling base model Cobalt rental with crank windows  so I wasn't able to get on here and see what Ashley had said the part was and confirm that with them).

At least on the way home I didn't get the TOP NOT SECURE message, so we're making progress anyway :)

I recently Purchased a 2006 G6 GT hardtop conv. for my wife and I am now getting a "top not secure" warning when I put the top up, also. No warrenty, took it to the dealer and they said it works fine. I see others have had this problem before, does anyone happen to know which switch was replaced and if you could provide some information I would like to try and replace it myself. Also noticed the top doesn't close as tight on the drivers side, I was wondering if there is any type of adjustment that I could make on it.

I had my '07 at the dealership for 2 weeks for this problem. When I got it back they said that the top was "completely misaligned" and they didn't know how it worked from day one. When I dropped it off it worked fine but gave the message. While they had it they said that the top locked up and they had to send someone into the trunk from the back seat to free it, a fact that I find hard to believe since I had no trouble operating it.
The only part they listed was a wire splice kit supposedly for a broken wire but I think that happened in the process of working on the top.
In my case one of the two arms that locks the rear of the trunk were not fully engaging or the switch was not registering.
In your case I think that you should look at the corner of the top that seems to be loose, that may be your cuprit. There is a hook that is driven by a hydraulic cylinder. It grabs a metal post in the windshield frame, pulls it close and then rotates around it to lock. When it has completely wrapped around the post it pushes a switch to indicate that the motion is complete and the joint is locked.
It sounds like the movement is not completing, the switch is open and is causing your "top not secure" message.
Hope this helps, it's all I know at the moment.

I was trying to put my top down. My trunklid went about 35% up and the car was not running. I've put my top up or down many times without the engine running. This time the battery went dead. The trunklid stopped right there. I charged the battery started the car and the trunk was still in that position. (TOP NOT SECURE) Okay my fix was easy. First I disconnected the sensors on the trunk. The trunk lid closed slowly by its self after the sensors were disconnected. As the trunklid was going down I reconnected the sensors. When the lid was almost closed I push it down the last 1/2 inch or so until it was locked in place. I started the car and hit the button. The top open normally and then I closed it. Good as new. Just the way it was before. I just wanted give out this info so G6 owners won't need to go to the dealer. By disconnecting the sensors it allows the hydraulic piston to slowly drain off the pressure that allows the lid to close. Before I did that my trunk lid was open all day and all night over 24 hours. So that's my fix I hope this helps someone. It's a shame Pontiac is gone it was and still is my favorite GM car ?

Where is the trunk sensor? I am having this exact issue. The top itself is relatched and the motor is not working on the top and the trunk is stuck in the open position. Essentially it is stuck between the opening cycle. I would like to relieve the pressure if the trunk to close it so as a minimum I can drive the car.

The sensors I disconnected are located on arms / brackets attached to the trunk lid. I will take some pics so U can see precisely. There are 2 wire connectors one on each bracket and they are two wire style connector. There are at least four switchs that need to compressed all at the same time before the motor / pump will activate. It gets very technical. You can manually release the pressure in the piston by opening the bypass valve. But you'll need to add some hydraulic fld. I'll post some pics tomorrow that will help.

Top Not Secure

Here's a pic of the connectors I unplugged. The wires go to the micro switches. I've open and closed my top at least 15 times since I was able get it working again. Hope that helps. Sorry it took so long to post the pics I've been very busy. Good luck I be interested to know if you were successful

Top Not Secure

What issues are you having if none. Don't worry about it. The only thing I can tell you is always have your car engine running and watch the little wings on the center deck lid are opening and closing properly. My top still goes up and down as it should I will say it hasn't been up for almost three months because it's been 90-100 degrees here every day and no rain.

Top not secure

Glad I read these articles -- Same issue -- Top Not Secure and just beeps at me although previously top was Complete --- Going to snow / Rain Saturday anyway so I'll call my mechanic ( although still under warranty ) somehow they find something that "isn't" covered under warranty ---- I'll mention the Striker arm -- also my Trunk Button inside doesn't work anymore -- Maybe a fuse???? and My Trunk doesn't stay up if its cold so it smashes my head ---
