Cone Air Filters

I currently have my stock air box out and replaced with a cone air filter. Is it bad to have a cone air filter open in the place instead of a stock air box? Would i lose engine protection?

Should def be better than the stock air box but you'll eventually want to put a box of some sort around it to block the engine heat. Colder intake air is always better.
