Transmission Fluid and Filter Change

Hey guys and girls! I need to get ya'lls opinion on if I should change my tranny fluid and filter or not. I have the 4T45 tranny just for some info. The car has almost 73k miles. The dealership I got it from has no record of the fluid and filter ever being changed. I know the owners manual says every 50k miles if you drive under one of their listed conditions. Being the car was used and I dont know if it was ever abused, would it be ok to have it changed? Ive heard if you wait too long to change it then it is better to just leave it be. Something about it can mess your tranny up with the clean fluid. So what are your thoughts? It seems to shift fine and Ive never had any problems since I bought it with 70k miles. I would hate to have it replaced and then have problems with it slipping. Thanks for your input.

With similar circumstances (85k, no known history of change) I took mine in to a transmission shop and got the fluid and filter changed. There were no problems with the transmission when I took it in that I am aware of and I have had no problems since (+13k miles). I think you will get a range of divergent opinions on this topic and will have to decide for yourself on the best course for your G6.

During the change the transmission shop reported the condition of my old fluid as "poor". All in all I am glad I had it done.

Generally speaking, the longer the transmission had been ignored the higher the risk of failure if you change the fluid. At 73k miles it is hard to say how much wear and damage had occurred. If the car was driven very mildly in the past, it could have very little wear. Or it could be worn out already if it was abused. There is no way of knowing for sure since you don't know its history. It's a risk. I would probably give it the benefit of a doubt and change it anyway. If you change it, you might have premature transmission failure. But if you don't change it, you might ruin a perfectly good transmission, which would be more costly in the long run.

You guys recommend the dealer to do this work or can I go to my private mechanic?
