Rear spring replacement

Do I need to compress the rear spring to take it out and to install a new one on my 2007 G6 GT ? I took a chance and put the car on stands then took the strain off suspension and unbolted the shock then dropped the suspension down and no luck. Still tight as a witches tit.

2007 G6 GT Emerald Green Metallic, sunroof, chrome wheels, continental dw tires, leather heated seats, in dash 6 cd player.
