Gm lan kit

I just tried to put in aftermarket dvd player. I went with the schocse Gm1593 it is junk would not recomend to anyone. The temp function dosnt work right. Also is not as looks on web is mainly a white light. I thought that this would be a better looking unit than the metra kit because it has two lcd lines but looks really bad. I have read that if you dont use either of these kits the remote start wont work and the service engine soon light will start coming on. Is that true? I really dont want to keep the factory radio but I dont want either of those kits any ideas?
