07 after market amp install when factory amp is blown

So my buddy tried to install my aftermarket amp today because my factory one was blown, however we have ran into a problem, we hooked everything up, convertor box, RCA connections, and amp turns on but no sound. We did some research and the consensus is that you have to have the factory amp operational to get a strong enough signal from the head unit to power the system. I have no idea how to put this aftermarket in with my factory radio, is there any suggestions, are we doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated I just want sound, bummer day!
