Hello all, recently I have been looking for a car for my daughter, it would be her first car and a local dealer has a 2010, with about 122,000 for 4995. Looks very clean, engine looks clean. Drove it and it drives well. What are the thoughts on the price. Any thought appreciated!
To be a 2010 the last eight digits of the vin need to begin with an "A". This is the last model year for any kind of Pontiac. Be prepared to to never be able to buy new parts and search for used parts when your car breaks down. And it will at some point.
For your own peace of mind and your daughter's be sure that this is what you want your daughter driving. Some Chevy Malibu parts will cross over but certainly not all of them.
I can not in good conscience support this decision.
I would run and look for something else.
I agree with Convertme, although I don't think it's that bad. It's definitely hard to find some convertible parts. And repair expertise. If you're looking at a 4-door, you'll probably be fine. But clearly the Malibu is almost the same car and parts are going to be generally more available.
As to the price, look it up on Edmunds. Their values are very accurate in my experience. I wouldn't pay stated dealer retail because there is no such thing as a Pontiac dealer and dealer support. But somewhere between private value and dealer retail would be reasonable. Maybe more if there is a warranty. Just be sure about the condition of the car.
Thank you both for your honesty, with your information I will be staying away from purchasing The Pontiac G6 I was looking at I will look at some other brands/models
If the price is good I wouldn't avoid the G6 even though it's discontinued. It's probably a good thing because it'll give you more bargaining power vs. other brands/models that are still in business.
I purchased a used 2007 V6 in 2016 and honestly, besides my Challenger RT, hands down the best, car I’ve had (I had an 03
Grand Am too and that was equally as good) Naturally I had to make repairs to it, such as a trans rebuild, heater core replacement and now a potential head gasket, many of the repairs were required after I was hit in the passenger front. I don’t know much about convertibles, but I think if you can get some to look the car over, make sure there are no serious leaks or potential leaks it is a good buy. I purchased a 2009 Malibu LTZ and I feel I’ve got more issues with this one than my 07 G6
Thanks all for the updated views, as I mentioned earlier this would be a "first car" for my daughter. I took this particluar G6 for a test drive. It drove well, brakes were good. Person with me said they did a good job cleaning up the engine and the car interior was clean. In my area of Michigan, Dealer sales seem to be about 4500-4900. I did a review of the VIN it is a 2010 as it has the A as another poster discussed.
I am not a mechanic by any means, my concern over the next few years high school/college years for my daighter will local mechanics/dealerships still be able to get parts and serivce.
Jay, that's a nice clean looking car. Pretty basic, which is good for a first driver. The price is at the high end of the range. But Causley was a Pontiac dealer, so if you can get them to throw in some warranty I would buy the car. They most likely have mechanics with Pontiac expertise. They also have a decent reputation all around as a dealer.
I will stand by my earlier comment. But I will add this. I would consider for myself but not for my daughter's. Sounds like dad has limited skills. These cars have proven to be reliable for many over time but some can be a problem.
I like Pontiacs, but your discounted car is worth zero when you want to trade it in.
I will likely get shunned for saying this but I call it like I see it
Dear dad,
Go on you tube and look for most reliable used Cars under $5000 or $10000.
Love your daughter.
I would seriously consider it if it is mechanically sound and the price is good. The car is already 10 years old. After a few more years by the time you sell it or trade it in it won't be worth much anyway. So being a discontinued brand should not be a factor. Parts are likely to still be available in the near future. I would shop around for other brands or model but I won't cross it off my list. Go for it if your daughter really likes it.
I might be chiming in a little late, but just because it's a discontinued model should not be a deterrent to buying it. The is/was a popular car and aftermarket parts like brakes, struts, electrical items etc. are going to be readily available for years to come. Dealer only items like body panels, lenses, interior parts may already be unavailable, but really why would you be looking for new dealer parts when junkyards are full of these cars?
Being her first car it's unlikely she's going to own it 3-5 years down the road. I agree the car is high priced probably because it's on a dealer lot instead of a used car lot, as someone else posted you can probably get some kind of drive train warranty for free or remember at any car dealer the price is negotiable and for every 1 car you pass up there are 3 more ready to take its place.
Thanks for all the input, I plan on going back to the dealership to see if there is any wiggle room on the price, when I went last week there was not.
As was mentioned, I can always continue to look around. Though I must say this is a real clean car, again I appreciate any input please keep it coming[/QUOTE
It is always interesting to hear how a story ends. I am curious what you did Silver Jay?
FWIW, the car is no longer on that dealer's website so someone must've bought it.
