New member- transmission issues

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and my sons car is down and I need some advice. It's a 2010 G6 with 110000 miles. While driving normally the engine started to squeal loudly and then the transmission no longer was engaged.

Added transmission fluid but did not make a difference. Does not operate in any position of the transmission, reverse, drive, 1st or 2nd gear. Engine just makes a loud squeal when running. Is this a sign that the transmission is finished or is there something else that could be the problem?
