Hello. My 2006 G6 keeps dying while I'm driving it. I just put a brand new battery in it 2 weeks ago. What occurs when this happens is as follows:

The theft protection light comes on, then at almost exactly the same time or just milliseconds before, I can feel the steering get tight as though the power steering is off and then (while the car is running) I lose power from the gas pedal........i.e. when I press on the gas, the the engine only revs up, the same as if the car was in park, neutral, or the transmission didn't work. Now I've gone over a couple of things as far as troubleshooting, but what really confuses me is why the theft protection light on the dash when this happens? Update: today it happened to me again twice. I am currently posting this while on the side of the road!! Everything happened the exact same way but now the engine light came on, followed by the battery light. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my question.

Welcome to the club. Perhaps this will help a little.

Security Indicator Operation
The theft deterrent module (TDM) can command the body control module (BCM) to illuminate the security indicator only when the ignition key is in the ON position. If the engine control module (ECM) loses communication with the TDM, the BCM will also detect the loss of communication and will illuminate the security indicator. The security indicator can indicate both malfunctions, indicator ON steady and tamper, indicator flashing. A flashing indicator indicates unauthorized operation.

Taken from the attached service article. Do you have the standard radio with the driver information center and does it have any messages? An advanced OBDII scan tool that can read the theft deterrent and other modules would likely give more information, even a basic one might provide some hints.

Hope you can get it sorted

Yes it has the messages on the radio. It has a few actually. Power steering has been coming up since this all happened but only when all the systems shut off; service air bag; and change oil soon......the last one being obvious as to why. I'm assuming the power steering occurs because of the system shutting off. When that happens though, the engine is still running and no power from the gas pedal. All the lights go out except for the warning lights. By now, I know to pull over/off. The engine has died completely both, before the car comes to a complete stop and I put it in park and turn off the key and when I have come to a complete stop and turned off the key. Both ways, the engine sputters all the way down and just shuts off. I will read the info about the immobilizer that you provided. Thank you for your help. Any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

A number of owners have discovered bad grounds on their G6. Personally, I would expect to experience the most problems during high current operations like starting the car or having the rear screen defogger / heated seats on. If you had a bad connection, ground or positive you could experience shutdown like experiences. Some have noted cracks in the fuse box wiring that produce intermittent faults that mostly vary with temperature. Poor connections have been noted at the BCM (was the subject of a recall) this was a simple fix to add electrical grade dielectric grease to the BCM connectors (i did both blue ones on mine). Work the grease into the connectors and gently wiggle the connectors into place a few times to get the best connection. I personally did the same for the PCM connectors, but there are people who advise against it, so please do your own research on that one. Beyond those wild guesses I would be looking to get more info from an advanced scan tool to see if I could work anything else out.
