2007 g6 issues with trunk and top

Hello, we recently purchased a used 2007 g6. It was purchased from the used dealer with the knowledge that there was an issue with the hydraulic system (specifics were not revealed). Recently we learned that the trunk has never been able to properly latch shut and is able to be opened without using the key fob or the button on the driver side door. What is odd is that the trunk can open from the window side towards the back as it would when the top is being lowered. The radio system alert “Top not secure” when the vehicle is started and when interacting with the button to remove the top. If
anyone has any idea what could be causing this or required any additional information to help out please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have had little luck finding issues similar to mine.

The convertible trunk has two opening modes. The 'reverse clam' when the top is to be moved and the more normal access to the trunk space for luggage etc. I am going to guess that
the trunk has never been able to properly latch shut and is able to be opened without using the key fob or the button on the driver side door.
refers to the fact that you can reverse open the trunk by hand, but that the normal mode of accessing the trunk is secure / latched and will not unlatch. If this is the case you are seeing the interlocks preventing the trunk lid from falling off the car if it gets released at both ends.

Continuing with the same assumptions, I would guess that how the car got into this state is the top would not secure using the hydraulics. Someone has manually locked the roof into place using the manual access cover in the front center of the headliner. As one of the steps before the top is locked is for the trunk to close and lock, this part would not be completed. Thus the top is in a position / state that is unexpected and the folding top module will lock out any movement.

Assuming my guesses seem reasonable so far, to fix the top you will probably need to consider the following:-
  • Whilst you have access to the trunk, check the hydraulic fluid level and bring it back to the max mark if required (about half way up the bottle). Pentosin CHF 11s is the fluid you will need.
  • If the fluid was low / empty, most likely there is a leak that caused at least part of the malfunction. Checking the cylinders may reveal which one(s). The main rams that move the roof are the most common to fail.
  • If the fluid is OK and assuming someone else didn't top it off, you may be looking at a sense switch issue. To diagnose this you will really need access to an advanced scan tool that supports the folding top module. This will tell you the condition of the switches etc.
Hope this helps. Let us know what you find based on the above and if you want to dig a little deeper. What you find may change how I would approach the diagnosis if it were mine.

I am having same issue. When i try to open mine it acts as though one side (drivers) wont release. Passanger side comes up about an inch and the driver side acts locked shut by the window. Tonite i heard a pop in there so guessing i blew the line again. Also after this you have to wait a while and disconnect battery to pop trunk with remote. i have re-wired both sides cause i had broken wires as well and along with that the window when it comes down about an inch when door is opened won t go back up now. any suggestions ar greatly appreciated. 2 more things- I was told u could use power steering fluid in pump? I dont wanna try if not true if ever need.. 2 can a fuel pressure sensor cause 7 mpg? says im running rich on both o2 sensors...? Fuel pressure regulator?
The fluid for the convertible top is Pentosin CHF 11s

The drivers window may need to go through the index relearn - Convertable power window problem

@tmbrian shared a useful video showing a number of the convertible top components like the front claws and sensor switch. Maybe it will help - 2007 G6 "Top Not Secure" Error
That video one of the best I've seen so far. Very detailed on what was needed. So somehow I stumbled on a scan app that reads top codes and I got a U2180. It says that its Pontiac code for "Lost communication with folding top control". also says the Importance level is 3/3, and difficulty level is 3/3. My question is it doesn't say anything about how to fix, so was wondering if anyone else seen this before and possible fixes? I was testing for power at switches yesterday to make sure was getting power and I was getting power to all switches except 2 on the passenger side. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also thanks for the post (can't remember who it was right now) about remote start. I did get this working oddly enough.
U2180 would indicate there are no messages on the GMLAN bus from the folding top module. My first thought would be to double check the FTM fuses in the trunk fuse box. I believe there are two of them, 3 and 12. After that I would be thinking bad connectors before considering it could be a faulty module. I have attached a generic 'lost communication' article from the service manual.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Thank you so much for tbhe info. Will be checking. Was messing with today and the side that always looked like it was trying to open had aftermarket lid support. i simply took it out and everything looks normal now. Is it possible it was registering an unlevel vehicle and stopping it then? Have not tried to open. Will tomorrow when have part . Let u know how goes. Again Thanks!! This the shock that was on mine. I believe it is also different from the other. i think last 2 digits on it where 50 and this one 60.
so got the right shock now and trunk lid stays open by its self. Cant seem to find anything to fix this hydraulic line though, any ideas? i have tried compression fittings and shark bite but nothing holds. Only option may be order new line,,,
I have not had to repair any of the hydraulic lines and have always assumed I would need to get a replacement from a car breaker / pick your part. You might find you have places that specialize in larger hydraulics like tractors, diggers etc that might be able to tell you if they will ever make repairs and what they would use to do it. I don't know if many places would work on something as thin as the hoses we have.

Pontiac (2) Top Hydraulics, does sell some replacement hydraulic lines.
