Sounds like except for that one incidient you had a great trip. I've been wanting to take a nice roadtrip in my G6 lately. Your tire guy wasright, I believe the G6 was the first of a few GM cars to use this size and since you could choose from the all-season goodyears (T-rated) or high performance Bridgestones (W-rated) that is all there is. IF you are wanting different tires you might want to consider getting the Bridgestones as summer tires and keeping the Goodyears for the winter.
