What is the current recommended oil capacity, with an oil filter change, for a 3.5L engine in a Pontiac G6 GT? My owner’s manual says 4.0 quarts. GM’s online manual says 4.0 quarts. But the GM dealer put in at least 4.5 quarts.
The oil level on my engine’s dipstick is above the full mark and into the twisted / spiral area of the dipstick. The GM dealership told me there was a revision to the 4.0 quart specification. Has anyone heard of a new oil capacity spec. for the 3.5L engine? Thank you.

Hello. New member here and also new G6 owner of a 09 sedan 3.5L with 41,000 miles on it. Just got it last Thursday. Our manual says 4 quarts. Maybe its 4 1/2 with filter change have yet to do oil change as its very clean. I would never overfill and you might want to drain some out.
First timers owning a 3.5. We had 3.1 in the old Grand Am that we owned for 13 years and have the 3.8 in our 04 Grand Prix and we have had that one for 7 years.

I believe the owner's manual is wrong. My dealer always overfill it 1/2 inch to 1 inch above the "full" mark on the dipstick. When new it also came overfilled from the factory and passed the dealer's pre-delivery inspection.

Guess i plan on filling past the full mark when i do that 1st change. When you think about it why would a 3.5 have a lower capacity oil sump than any other v6?

Just because its a V-6 doesn't mean that you have the same oil capacity, maby they put a smaller or larger oil pan on your car than the next ? an I-6 Cummins has 6 cylinders but multiple of the amount of oil your 6 cylinder would need.... ? And my G6 is going to be getting 4qts from now on because I'm going with placement on the dip stick till in find out something different, the last time I changed the oil in it and put 4.5qts it put it well over where it needed to be.
