Bad decision, GM has been trying to improve the identity of its brand names. Thats the reason for killing off the old names (Grand Am, Seville, Park Avenue etc.). Now we have the Pontiac G6 by GM? No one wants to show of their GM. Does Toyota put little Toyota badges on Lexus? Honda on Acuras? BMW on Minis? No. Chrysler did this in the late 80's and throughout the 90's. They had a little pentastar on the front fender molding. People who buy Saabs and Cadillacs do not want the same logo on their car as the guy with the Chevy Cobalt.

There is a big difference between your analogy to Toyota and Lexus. They made the decision that they are different markets and price points, and it would be detrimental to have too much of a cross association between them.

For GM, the price points and segments do overlap. It is also not economical to have the same car under two badges (Taurus and Sable for example). As such to make the transition from multiple sub brands to one brand you must start to have your customers associate positively with the new brand.

The result will be positive associations with GM, not with the individual sub-brands (Pontiac...). Then when people contemplate buying a new car they will look at the entire GM line (with whom they have a good association); which is a full line.

I really miss when Pontiac was a Pontiac. Had traditional Pontiac engines. There was a true brand difference. I really miss my 1978 Trans Am with the Pontiac 400 and 4 speed!!
I thought 1977 was the last year for Pontiac engines. For 78 it was the Olds 403. Or am I a year too early.

1981 was the last year for the Pontiac V8. They were the 301 N/A and Turbo and the 265.

The Iron Duke 4 cylinder was a Pontiac motor as well and lived on 'till '88 I believe.

According to the article, it stated newly introduced & ALL 2006 models. I seem to have bypassed their badge applier on the production line (not that I'm complaining though...). I would be interested in knowing just how many of us actually DO have this badge on our vehicles (or at least have seen them).
