So i own a 2007 pontiac g6 hardtop convertible and i took the top partially down to clean the weatherstrips, during that time the top closed on its own.

I hopped back in to bring it back down again but i got the error 'top not secure' not knowing what to do i had a friend help lift up on the other side and we were able to get it free without much struggle.

I then continued bringing the top down after it was freed, this time all the way because i didn't want to repeat that. When it was close to being done i heard some loud cracking. Upon examination i found that the driver side batwing clip broke as well as the spring rod (not sure if thats the right name for the part).

Then when i closed the top i found that the rubber weatherstrip that connects the hardtop to the windshield had loosened up as well as The weatherstrip that sits under the edge of the trunk had also peeled back somehow. (I'll attach photos)

I was wondering if it was my fault that the batwing broke since we kinda pushed it up to free it before bringing it back, maybe that messed with the operation? Or is it somewhat common for the batwing to fail. Unfortunately i didn't inspect it right when i heard the cracking (thanks panic brain).

Also is it difficult to repair the weatherstrips? Sorry for writing an entire book lol.

(Attached photos of the corners of the weatherstrip connecting the top to the windshield as well as a photo of the weatherstrip lining under the trunk.)

1st, never stop the roof mid cycle and cut the power if you can avoid it. . Once the pump stops, the system will lose pressure and the roof will settle down from whatever position it was in when last powered and can cause serious damage. There is a "service position" that utilizes straps to hold the roof safely mid-position, but it's hardly convenient. You can find a thread about it by searching "service position". Sorry about the damage and good luck.

The batwings do fail on their own. The cables can get worn and the hinges get weak leaving the wing just in the path of the top and crack, it gets snapped. The good news is that the bat wing is not needed to use the top, you just end up with a bat wing sized hole. The bad news is they are hard to find and difficult to repair. JB weld or superglue won't normally hold.

The weatherstrip is a pain. You can usually clean it out and push it back into place but it will likely leak and you will get a nice water well round the spare tire. I used one of the flex seal type of products to glue and seal mine back into place. So far it seems to be holding, but as always, your mileage may vary.

Hope you can fix it.

Thank you. I never actually noticed at first but the top does get quite close to the batwings. I guess it probably did get caught :(
