Hi All,

2007 GT Convertible. I bought mine certified use last year. I had the clunking when turning the wheel, dealer replaced the intermediate shaft and that clunk when turning/accelerating/stopping went away. I had also brought it in for what I would describe as a clunking when going over bumps, almost sounds loose. The dealer didn’t fix this saying they didn’t know what I was talking about. That was at about 35,000 miles. Now I’m at 47,000 miles and I still have my clunking when going over bumps. To me it almost sounds like bad ball joints but since my wife’s 2009 Malibu has had this same noise since new I doubt that’s what it is. Someone suggested possibly tie rod ends having nylon inserts that wear since you apparently can’t grease them. Anyone have a similar problem or read about a possible solution?

i have the same issue but mine is a sedan. i haven't done much research on it though.

I think mine has the issue with the steering shaft. sometimes i hear it and sometimes i don't. I will describe the issue and would really appreciate your input.

at almost any speed it makes a clunking sound i can feel in the steering wheel. it only seems to be the drivers wheel. i have checked the wheel bearing and the tie rods seem to be tight. it turns into a vibration with freeway speeds. i don't know what other details would help but does this sound like the steering shaft or whatever you were talking about?

as for the clunking over bumps. it is probably just a strut issue

i have the same issue as the OP...its not the steering clunk and i hear it going over bumps when its cold out. i've been told it could be the strut mount bushings. im hoping to have it checked out before winter rolls around cause it sounds like the front end is going to collapse when the car first starts...after it warms up the sound isn't as bad.

I have a 2006 G6 GT, when I bought the car it had a horrible knocking sound when I would go over bumps. I took it back to the dealership and they replace my tie rods and the racking pinion. Didnt hear the noise for about two weeks then it came back. Every time I go over a bump or hit a bump on the road the sound is now a clunking and you can hear the struts or something squeek. Should I just go have a mechanic look and see if it is my struts?

Inner and outter tire rods are mainly the cause for this. I had the same problem and changed the inners, and now 30,000 added I have the same problem and to change the outters. It's the knuckle where it connects, like a ball joint. Essentially just wearing out. Hope this helps.

That's interesting you say that. A mechanic friend said the tie rod ends have a nylon liner that wears out and start clunking. He said he didn't believe they were greasable on the Epsilon platform and thought that drilling the side of the joint and installing a grease fitting might help. Thoughts?

I will be doing my tie rods that haven't been replaced then the struts. I can't stand the squeaking and the clunking anymore. My alignment is off again and I just had it aligned three moths ago. Could that be a sign of my tie rods?

My experience with a clunk was after changing my struts. I was cheap and did not order the upper mounts which include the nylon bearings. The result was a double clunk as I went over bumps or turned the steering wheel. Hope you find the solution, I know it drove me crazy.

Hu everyone,

I have a 2008 model with a knocking noise as described in this thread. I have read many threads on these forums about steering column/intermediate shaft related knocking issues, and this thread matches my situation almost exactly. And that is...I have had the intermediate shaft replaced and that solved the dull clunking noise when turning at low speeds, but I am still left with a rattle (or double-knocking) when going over bumps at medium-to-highway speeds.

The rattle sounds like it is coming from right in front me, right behind the dash - like behind the odometer. It really sounds like it's coming from inside the car, not outside. I know how sound can travel, but still, it's really strange.

The original intermediate shaft diagnoses seemed to make sense, as the knocking (as well as the clunking) was just the sort of noise you could imagine a problem like that causing, and in the right area! I've had strut and tie rod problems on other cars, and it doesn't sound like this.

It happens most at medium-to-highway speeds, so mostly when going straight or straight-ish. But even then, it doesn't do it all the time. I can drive to work at it won't do it at all, then I can drive out at lunch and it will sound like there's something seriously loose! Or vice versa. It can even just start in the middle of a journey. Hot or cold doesn't seem to make a difference.

I did some more research online and found various tie rod and sway bar possibilities. I asked my dealership to check those out and they said it was nothing like that. They found the battery box was loose so put it down to that - but of course that wasn't it either.

The thing is, it doesn't do it reliably, either when I take it in to the dealership and road test it with them, or when they do some work and then road test it afterwards. So it's easy for them to think they've solved the problem when they haven't. But I do 500 miles week, and it does it enough for me!

I'm wondering whether my dealer didn't check the tie rod or sway bar possibilities very diligently? I'm also wondering whether tie rod or sway bar problem could really sound so much like they are coming from inside the car? Or are there any other possibilities.

I just had my driverside ball joint witch is part of the lower control arm both had to be replaced. sound is gone and the car is driving straight again. I also had my tie rods replaced along time ago cuz at highway speed the car would shake. I would look at both. :)

Thanks. Did your problem result in the noise really sounding like it was coming from inside, behind the dash in front of the driver?

Yours sounds a little different than mine. There are some similarities towards the end. Yours sounds more like something loose rattling around and banging, it’s hard to tell. I’ll have to try and see if I can get a good recording of mine. My phone stinks so I don’t know how well it will turn out. From your recording it seems like yours is a lot louder than mine but that could be just sensitivity of the microphone. Mine happens at virtually any speed, as long as there are bumps. I’ll see if I can find a place to record where there isn’t any wind noise at slow speeds to distort the sound.

Hi,

I tried recording my clunking sound and it really didn’t sound on the recording thru my crappy phone like it does in real life. My recording sounds more similar to your recording than it does what it actually sounds like when I’m in my car. I think it’s probably the recording quality. My recording just sounds like things banging and clanking around and not the actual clunking-rattle I hear when actually driving. It’s very possible we are having the same problem. I really need to get my car up on the lift and check everything out.

I’ve heard about people lubricating the intermediate shaft. I also had mine replaced about 10,000 miles ago. I don’t have the original clunking when turning the wheel like I did before but I’d certainly be willing to “lubricate it” to rule that out is I knew how. Anyone have a link to an article describing how to lubricate the intermediate shaft?

I'd upload my recording but it's only an audio and neither this site or YouTube allows audio files so I can't seem to share it. If someone knows of an audio upload site I'll upload it there.

I have a similar noise in my 2008 with 72,000 miles. The Ball Joint in the Lower Control Arm of the Front Suspension is loose. I am replacing the control arm assembly this weekend. You can do a simple check (this is how I found the issue): jack up the front end until the tires are off the ground, try to move or shake the tire/wheel. If it moves, look carefully at the suspension while moving and try to locate the loose parts. You should be able to tell if it is a ball joint, tie rod or strut. For the steering wheel clunk issue, tighten the intermediate shaft bolt under the dash.
I will post the results of my lower control arm replacement.

TexasG6 - Try re-torquing the Steering Intermediate Shaft bolt located under the dash.
I had a similar issue and that seemed to fix it.

Hey everyone, I've had my G6 for since new. It has had many of the suspension issues that everyone here talks about. The car has 130k miles and I am on my 2nd set of lower control arms/ball joints. The ball joint sound was clunking going over all bumps and if you jack the car up you can recreate it by shaking the wheel.

Recently my G6 started to make a clunk sound every time you hit the breaks abruptly, I have been trying to track down the origin for weeks. It turned out to be the rear bushing on the lower control arm. No matter what I tried I could not recreate the noise when on a lift or jacked up. The only way we were able to track it down was to have one person hold a crow bar on each spot that it could have been the problem and try and recreate it.
