I inherited my father's 2005 G6. Searching google it seems like this car came with 5W30 synthetic from the factory, but the last oil change receipt says they used 5W30 conventional. I'm sure my dad had no idea there was such a thing as synthetic oil and had been running conventional for awhile. The car has 87K miles.

Did all versions of this model always come with synthetic? Or is it possible this car came with conventional to begin with? And is it doing the car any harm to keep running conventional? It is lightly driven and only in warm (Los Angeles) conditions.

The car was designed to run on conventional oil. A high quality conventional motor oil and changing it at regular intervals is good enough to fully protect the engine.
