electric motor change power assist steering

I change the motor attached to the steering column. This included the plug ins. Old one was shaking and intermediately stopping. The one from the parts yard, does not work at all. Question now, does the used motor have to be flashed, recalibrated or anything else? Or should I go back to the yard and swap out for another?
