Fuel pump relay issues

44566 Views 20 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Tjfleming75
I have an intermittent issue where my fuel pump relay stays in the open position when trying to restart the car (resulting in no fuel pressure). I thought it was a bad relay and I replaced it twice.

Now I know its not the relay.

When I remove and re-insert the relay the car will start fine and work for a few days fine and then the problem will return.

Could this problem be an alarm issue (has factory alarm)?
Could it be an inertia sensor issue (where are the inertia sensors located)?
Has anyone seen this problem?

HELP!:(

There is no inertia fuel pump cut-off switch on your car.

What exactly are your symptoms?

I see that five months ago, you were asking how to replace the fuel pump. Has that been done?
symptoms

Greenman,

Thanks for the reply. The symptoms are that the car will be running fine. But, every few days the car will not start (the car could be hot or cold). I go to the trunk and remove the fuel pump relay and re insert it, the car then starts and runs fine. This happens every few days.

and yes I did remove replace the fuel pump, but this was happening before replacing my fuel pump.

So the engine cranks reliably right? You aren't getting a No Crank condition?

No warning lamps lighting up?
Was there any resolution on this? My wife's 2010 G6 GT is having this exact problem. Every other day or so, the car will crank but not start. The temporary fix is removing and reseating the fuel pump relay in the trunk fuse box. It will go several start cycles but will fail again within a few days. Taking out and reseating the relay enables it to start again. I don't believe it is the fuel pump because it runs fine once started. I have replaced the relay but that did not fix it. Could it be related to the anti-theft system, like it somehow forgets her key? If so, why would reseating the fuel pump relay fix this? Confused in Indiana. Thanks for any suggestions.
It may not be the fuel pump relay or fuel pump

Bemo,

Don't replace the fuel pump until you verify the fuse box itself. I had the same issue with my car and I replaced the relay twice (returned a good one thinking that they sold me a defective one). It turned out to be that the ground connector in the fuse box to the relay (when the relay false it gets hot). I re-solder the cable to the connector and the problem was resolved. My car had 98k miles when this issue appeared and drove an additional 35k miles before trading in the car without the issue reappearing.

Hope this helps!
More high resistance connectors.

Rvega, Thank you for the suggestion. You were right on the money. One of the wires/connectors going into the back of the fuse block was making an intermittent connection. I found the right wire because the gray plastic around it on the back side was a bit brownish like it had gotten overly hot (a bit disturbing isn't it?). I was able to remove the wire and spade connector from the block and then solder the connection. You helped save me a bunch o' cash. Thanks again!
car runs a few days then will start and stall

My car at first was making a cranking sound, after hours of just sitting my car would start a run for a day or so, I got a brand new battery thinking it was that and the issue still happened. I had a mechanic come out and said it was my starter so I replaced that, my car is still having the same issue, I was able to drive a long distance and back until this morning I drove my daughter to school went and got gas and the car would try to start the engine would turn over then it stalls, I sat there 20 min or so and It started right up, can anyone please help me, I think it maybe a fuel pump issue but I don't have the money to keep putting in to things that are not the issue, my car is a 2008 g6 gt

what wires did you have to do this too? my car is doing the samething
My 2010 is doing the same thing. How do you take the fuse box apart? I can't find Nothing on line
Hi!

I am having this EXACT same issue with my 06 g6 gtp. Could you tell me where the fusebox is located in the trunk?

Ive been trying to figure this out for over a year now! :)

Thanks in advance!

Location of Fuel Pump Relay fusebox

Hi!

I have been battling this for a year now and need help. Would you mind explaining where the Relay is located?

Thank you so much!

Nick
I have 2010 g6. My fuel pump relay is in the trunk. Left side under a hidden flap of hard felt. Open that and I found that fuse box. Fuel pump relay was bottom back block
We replaced the fuel pump and about 5 months latter we have a real problem.. The trunk fuse box is now toasted and also took out the fuel pump. $1100 to fix. The real problem is the fuse box overheating and causing the relay to the fuel pump to not work once in a while. Pontiac G6s are junk. Electrical nightmares.
It is the fuse box in the trunk. Replace it. There is a short that will bet worse. Mine took out the fuel pump.
I realize this is an old thread but if anyone is still active, please help me out. My daughter just recently got this nightmare 2010 G6 2.4l FF and it is having the same intermittent Crank, no start problem. Just like the OP if I take the relay out and put it back in then jiggle the wires behind the fuse box, it will start right up. Has anyone been able to pinpoint the exact problem and explain the fix in detail so I can try to remedy this?
There are a few members who have noted cracks in the copper tracks that connect the fuse box internals. Usually this is affected by heat, so once everything cools down it will start again. The wiggling suggests some sort of intermittent connection. Some mentioned replacing the fuse box and I seem to remember someone soldering the broken joint.
