If the hydraulic fluid was low it is most likely you have a fluid leak. When the top makes a loud crack or snapping noise, unless there was some other obstruction, it would often be one of the plastic wings on the flip up cover did not move fully out of the way. The hinges are operated by what I would think of as a bicycle brake cable that pulls them out of the way when the top is in motion. In my case the hinge on the wing snapped, but the glass and roof were ok. The plastic wings are mostly cosmetic and the top can function without them as long as they remain out of the way.
