Relating this to motorcycles, it's kinda like Harley to Honda (or any metric). While many of the chrome parts and accessories are actually chrome plated metal (from Taiwan, mind you) most of the same chrome parts and accessories on metrics are plastic.
Look at just about any like maintained bike after about five years. Most of the chrome on the HD's will start to rust over time, while the plastic chrome on the metrics still looks new.
While I say all that, I am indeed surprised to see (1) that such a technology is being used on wheels and (2) that sets of these wheels are bringing close to $900 on Ebay. Makes me feel better to know I only have about $185 (net) in mine
