Hey guys, this Saturday I'm going to get a new car. I have been trolling this site for a couple months now because I had my mind set on getting a G6. The problem I'm facing is I have found a helluva deal on a Grand Prix, and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone had experience with both a 08 G6 GT and an 08 Grand Prix? What are the pros and cons of both?

Two things first: If your name is in fact K.Bacon, I guess we can presume you're not the famous actor, unless things are REALLY tough in Hollywood now

Also, you could change your name & username to KAwesome, as that would mean the same thing :bravo:

Anyway, as to your question - I had an 05 Grand Prix Comp G before my G6 and I really liked it. I'm guessing the 08 you're looking at is the base model? Probably a bit underpowered compared to the G6 as the GP is a slight bit heavier and IIRC the GP engine is a little less powerful. Much more room, especially trunk space, in the GP. Modability, I believe post 2005 GP's are tougher to get more than minimal gains out of due to a change in the PCM configuration. That was the case a while back; someone may have been able to crack them since then. But given that they haven't, that puts the GP & G6 on roughly the same par. The G6 GT should have TAPshift, which I really like but a lot of people dismiss as gimmicky. Also I'm presuming the GP doesn't have HUD, which was one of the great features IMO on my 05 and would definitely sway me to the GP.

So I guess the bottom line is if performance is your main goal (and it can't be TOO much of a goal or you'd be looking at different cars :p ), the G6 would be a slight winner, but if you need trunk space the GP is better. Pretty similar overall tho'

Make sure to check out my next two movies! Tremors 5 - Straight to Bargin Bin and Footloose 2 - I Wish I Could (Still) Dance!

Haha just a nickname I picked up somewhere along the line.

No, performance clearly isn't my main goal, but since I'm upgrading from an Escort, it certainly will feel it. I guess same goes with all of space too! I haven't had a chance to to drive or look over either of them extensively, so I guess all I'm really curious about is what other people would do with the same choice.

Well guess you'll just have to try them out - I guess too see what the mileage & overall condition is for each and factor that in as well.

And in re-reading my post I should clarify that the Awesomeness I'm referring to is bacon the food product, not Bacon the actor. Not that he's not a fine thespian in his own right, just that I could go for some bacon right now :bravo:

Haha i have a friend from school named Kevin bacon. I thought you might be him but i don't think he moved from illinois. I wish i could input on help but ive only driven the base gp. And id take the 6 over it. My friend had a GTP that was in the low 13. But i think it falls into what droptop was saying about. Harder to mod the new ones.

If he did move I can't imagine it would be to Maine haha. Yea, the GP I am looking at is a base model. Any reason in particular you prefer the 6? One thing I am curious about, and would probably be a deal breaker for me, is the general size of the car, I don't want something to big (that's what she said). I know that the 6 will be a huge jump up from my Escort, so my assumption is that the GP is a big jump up from the 6? I mean, I guess I will find this out when I actually drive it, but just kind of curious in the mean time.

The G6 is actually quite a bit smaller than the Grand Prix - I didn't even realize it until I Zaino'ed the G6 for the first time. I poured out as much Z-2 as I had used in the past and had a good 1/3 left over at the end - almost enough to do a full 2nd coat

I've owned a GP GT for the past six years and it has been a great car. I would have to say that it has offered the best mix of comfort, performance, space and mileage of any car I've owned.

I've looked pretty extensively at the G6 over the past two years and I love the high window sills that lend a sports car feel, and I like the telescoping steering column which helps tailor a comfortable driving position. I also like the control placement on the G6. The overall look of the car is a slick design and its always good to have curb appeal, especially when its in your driveway.

The 3800 in the GP is a stout engine and a solid performer with lots of bottom end grunt. The newer models still have aftermarket mods available for them, you just have to visit the right websites. PFYC and ZZ performance offer tons of upgrades for the GP.

Interior room and trunk space are defintely a premium for the GP but I wouldnt call it a land yacht. Oddly enough, the G6 actually sports a longer wheelbase but a smaller overall size. The base GP is faily nicely equipped but do yourself the favor of checking out a GT model. There are many available for great prices and the GT package brings a lot with it.

For me, deciding between the two cars is a tough split. I like both of them a great deal and I'm not sure what will be the deal breaker for me. The best advice I can give is to not let a salesman pressure you into an instant purchase. There is ALWAYS another car to be found. Do yourself the favor of driving both cars, maybe even different models of each, before you plunk down your hard earned bucks. Youre the one who has to live with the decision long term, another few days of info gathering is time well spent.

Good insight overall - just keep in mind that Pontiac has had a trend over the years, and moreso the last few, to shuffle the lineup designations so that "GT" is pretty much meaningless.

When I bought my 89 Grand Prix I got the SE model which was top of the line - there was base, LE and SE. By the time I got my 97 GTP, SE was now the low end model as it was SE, GT and GTP (supercharged engine).

That stayed until 04 when there were only GT and GTP, but with the "subgroups" of GT1 and GT2, and GTP and Comp G. Right away in 05 they changed the GT1 to base and GT2 became the only GT, and the GXP was added with the V8. Then in 06 the GTP designation went away and the GT was now equivalent to the GTP. So for 06 and 07 you have base, GT (supercharged) and GXP (V8).

In 08 (the final year) they dropped the GT so you only had base and GXP.

See what I mean :banghead: ? I'm not as well versed in the G6's history but from what I gather it's a similar tale of model designation swapping, where one year's GTP is the same as another's GT.

Thunderbat - I appreciate all of the insight, it definitely gives me a lot to think about.

Droptop - Wow, just wow. Apparently Pontiac likes to keep its customers on their toes. I was wondering what the differences between the base and GT were for the 6 and I really couldn't seem to find much, guess that basically confirms that.

Thanks to everyone for the input, I'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow :D

KBacon, its probably too late but I wanted to add my 2 cents :D I have driven both the GP and the G6 and the G6 comes on top always. Dont get me wrong, I loved the Prix but the G is the shitze :) from my exp. the G gets better mpg and its faster, roomier and not as cheaply made as the GP. The Prix is a nice car though, so you cant go wrong with whatever you buy!
