Fill a jerry jug with gas, take it with you and when the light comes on drive it until it runs out of gas.
I'm willing to bet it varies from vehicle to vehicle so a definitive answer can't be given.
Generally speaking, it seems the average for all cars is "1 - 2 gallons"
I know it's at least a gallon; I've driven 20 miles with a light (the average MPG on my 2007). This site has a lot of claims of ~35 miles, which would be 1.5 gallons.
When my fuel light comes on, I fill up. It takes anywhere from 12-14 gallons
depending on my mileage at the time. With a 16 gallon tank, that means there
are 2-4 gallons left.
