Installing a reverse camera

15890 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  tmbrian
I recently installed a reverse camera on my car, but the problem I have now is figuring out how to hook it up so that when I put my car in reverse, the camera comes on (and then turns off when it switches to another gear).

I guess I'm looking for the location of the reverse switch, but I can't seem to find a wiring diagram for this.

I have a 2007 G6 with a Kenwood DDX-419, if that helps. :)

the switch is on the transmission, on the shifter shaft below the brake master cyl, a meter should help locate the backup light wires
backup lights also have a fuse in the fuse box
You want the light green wire to the reverse lamps anywhere along it's run from the rear fuse block to either lamp. When that gets pulled high that supplies the on signal to your new baby. At least that's how I'd wire it.

Sweet, I'll look for the light green wire and see if that'll do it. I'll let you guys know if it works! Thanks.
Found the wire, hooked up the camera, put it in reverse and...found out I installed the camera upside down! Haha! It was an easy fix, it works great and I'm very happy with it. Thanks for the help!

Today, I installed a backup camera with the rear view mirror from Echomaster. Purchased from Best Buy. With the help of this forum and additional web searches, I was able to get it working perfectly. For my 2007 G6, I spliced into a lighter green wire. There are two of them, one going to each of the reverse lights. The third green one is a different color green. That one was for one of the brake lights (oops). Easy fix to put it back together though. I spliced the red wire from the camera into the left reverse light, lighter green wire. The black wire from the camera spliced into one of the ground wires that was screwed into the vehicle chassis. The mirror had to be powered from a 12v source, so I ran wire from the inside of the cigarette lighter sockets to the supplied red wire for the mirror. VOILA, it all worked! Picture looks clear and bright, and only works when in reverse. I love it!

Nice, how do you like the mirror style so far?
I like it. It's really clear and bright, and works very well.
I would have really liked to wire the camera into my replacement head unit, but it's such a pain in the arse to get it out.

It’s fairly easy to get the head unit out. I think I take mine out in about five to seven minutes. I’ve been looking for a decent mirror display because I thought I was doing the reverse camera wrong. The whole time my headunit not recognizing it when in reverse.

Oh yeah? When I did research for replacing mine, it appeared to be a huge pain. This is what I've got now in my 2007 G6.

Is it possible to install a Echomaster rear view mirror backup camera on a 2007 Pontiac G6 hardtop convertible?
