took my 2007 G6 to the dealer whith a poping sound coming from my steering when i would be at a stop sign and turning the wheel and starting to accelorate it would pop when i took the car to the dealer they told me there was not enough lubercatoin from the factory on the intermedste shaft so they took it apart and relubercated it and put it back on the car What is wrong with GM are they losing that much money where they can't fix defective parts on a car or dont want to stand behinde a warranty if there is not enough grease on something to start making noises thens its at teh begining stages of being damaged so why would they not replace it no now i get to wonder how far i have to drive for it to snap and my car is ib the side of the road

Guess they haven't fixed this problem yet. My 06 needed the intermediate shaft replaced at 50,000 miles
Our 06 had it just replaced at 25K and the power steering module or assist module?
i just had to have my i-shaft repositioned and lubricated to alleviate what i called a rattle and the tech called a clunk...three days later and the rattle is still there...what is going on with these i-shafts?
i still say gm is trying to save money and have there service departments milk out bad parts and hope they make it to you warranty is up they use to fix the problems frist time no questions asked and always replaced the part never tried to nurse it
Intermediate shaft 06' GTP

Well I just signed on to this site tonight and so far so good. My wife's 06' GTP has been to the local dealership 3 times now and they have finally ordered the new shaft. We are in agreement with the sentiment that GM should just replace the defective part instead of waste shop time and customer time. Well enough of this, will check in later.
yeah i had the poping noise on my 05 ... i replaced the rack and pinion assembly ... seems that the noise went away
Had the same "clunking" noise as you all have describes. Repositioned the intermediate shaft and replaced the power steering rack. Still didn't do the trick. They replaced the power steering motor claiming the bearings were bad. Still no. Then replaced the intermediat shaft. Nice try but still not it. Now it's in for a new steering column assembly. Who knows? It would be nice to fix the problem instead of band-aids every time.
More issues

:mad:Our G6 is still in the shop, they have replaced the intermediate shaft but we still have what sounds to be a grinding noise that you can hear and feel in the floorboards and the steering wheel. I have taken 2 of their techs for rides as well as the service manager and they have all felt this. Also they felt a low speed woble that they said was possibly bad tire so they are going to address that issue as well. But they can't find the noise in the front end so the told us to come get it and that is may have to get worse before they could find it! Yet they tell us that it is safe to drive but they don't know what the problem is, we refused to take the car since they could not guarentee that the car was 100% safe to drive. We are going to write the warranty department and look into the lemon law statues for the state we live in.
just got my g6 back from the shop (3rd visit)...they changed out the left strut and bearings...*seems* to have done the trick. mechanic said w/the strut the issue it would make sense i heard the clunk sound most when turning and driving slow (most pressure on the strut). maybe have them check that?

most states lemon laws say they get 3 chances to fix it--i live in minnesota, where they get 4 (which sucks). for the best info on the lemon law, call your attorney general's office.
Glad to see Im not the only one experiencing problems with GM's poor quality drive train. I have an '05 and brought it into the dealer just before the warranty expired, because it was starting to make noise, I told them I thought it was the wheel bearings starting to go, the mechanic and the manager said no, its the tires, they need to be replaced. Well, after a longer time then I should have waited, I replaced the tires and low and behold the sound was louder and the part was well out of warranty. Asked my mechanic friend to look at it, he said both of the front wheel bearings were shot. Replaced them both on my dime cus GM wouldn't pony up to bad mechanics. Now, the left front half shaft is gone and that needs replaced. Wonder how long I have until I have another drive train problem?
I do have that pop when turning....how much does the rack and pinion cost to replace, and how much to replace the intermiediate shaft...I am asking because my car is no longer under warranty and I will have to pay for this myself.

I would also like to know the answer also is this considered powertain or the 3yr-36k mile warranty?

(I put this question in 2 threads just in case;))

They will probably just use the lubrication kit for the pop when turning... and that could be paid for by GM... Goodwill... you should ask. The dealership did that for me. GM knows it's a problem. But also, that problem will probably come back....

Also, if you end up having to get the rack and pinions replaced it's like $650-700. That's what my baby is having done today. The symptom of the rack (for my car) was a thumping/rattly something or another in the front end.
I had the same promblem last oct-nov 08. I ask them to replace the I shaft and the dealer contacted Gm because I had 65000km ( out of warranty ) and decided to rposition and grease for 48.00. it fix the the clunk at the time but It started again in the last month. I am about check with them again ....
So far greasing mine has fixed the problem completely. /shrug

This might sound like a dumb question, but where are you greasing your at? I only have 26,000 on mine I've had Front control arms replaced, bushings, I-Shaft, all replaced and it is clunking again.
Also IDK if this is happening to anyone else, but my G6 is all over the road. When I take off, or brake it pulls to the left or the right (depending on what mood it is in). I was in an Aura the other day drives wonderfully! No pulling clunking or anything and that person lived on a dirt road.
Actually they do have a replacement ISS that is around $175.00 installed in Canada. Grease will repair it but I do not believe permanently.
