Lookin at an '06 GTP

Hey guys. I've always owned beaters since my '93 V6 Plymoth Acclaim. The latest is asking for more money to fix the exhaust and maybe an electrical problem. So instead I've been looking for a new car. Unfortunately my Lumina is too fuel efficient to qualify for the Cash for Clunkers thing that's going on so a new car that I would enjoy is out of my price point.

I've been searching online and was looking at the Mazda6 at first then saw the comperable G6 and liked that even more. I found one in the area at a used car dealership going for $14K. It has 52K miles on it which seems a bit high. Seeing as i'm going to have to finance the car for 4-5 years I was wondering if there were any problems or routine maintainence that would be coming up that would seriously effect my wallet. Also, when getting in the car and taking it for a test drive anything in particular that I should look for that would be a tell tale sign of possible future problems. Also, I live in MA so I was wondering about handling in the snow. Would a GT possibly a better car for me?

Finally, what should I be paying for this car and any suggested negotiation tips to get the price down?

Thanks in advance for any advice and hopefully I will be a true member soon.

As far as the G6 goes the newer the better. There were some issues with the latter models that have been addressed. Yes, get the GT if you can.
I know its a hard call between the G6 and the Mazda 6 since I owned both, you'll like the G6.
I bought my 06 GTP for 13,900 out the door. Thats what I told them and after saying it 3 times they said ok. It had 33,000 on it. I'd say you can get them down a little more. I would say test drive it and bring a check list with you with some of the problems you read on here. Wind noise from sunroof, Warped rotors, alignment off, steering issues "electric steering only", Wet floor board "if sunroof equipped", Blown speakers, Jammed CD player, power seat clunk, Clunking sound from steering turning corners, Dashboard popping sound when driving over unlevel ground. All these to consider.
I bought my GTP in 2006. I never had a issue with it until now. My A/C went out. Its true that this car has issues but that what you get for a affordable mid-size car.
I bought my 06 GTP brand new and have 62k on it, had to take it back to the dealer to have the starter problem fixed the first month but since then just tires and brakes. As for the price check nadaguides.com and kbb.com (kelly blue book) for the retail value. Make sure to test drive, start and restart sevarl times, check for brake pulsation, steering noise, vibrations, etc. I have a manual trans but an auto should have the fluid changed, and I would flush the dexcol crap out of the cooling system, dealer could take care of these services before you buy it.
