Both seem to agree that the car is worth $8K. A friend of mine says I'll get $5K for that car because its american, Ive been looking on autotrader.com and cars with this mileage and equipment have been selling for $10/11K at dealers.

Unfortunately you can do all the research and pricing you want but in the end it's only as valuable as some one is willing to pay for it. Any car lot is going to low ball you in order to turn a bigger profit. You'd likely be better off trying to sell it and then buy rather than taking a loss on a trade in.

The best thing to do is do research on what cars like yours are going for in your area. See what owners are selling it for and what dealerships are selling them for, keep in mind dealerships typically get their cars in trades for way less and then price them for a profit. Especially used car dealerships who most likely get the cars from repo auctions/insurance auctions/etc. Going to KBB or any other website gives you a generic estimate in your area but to get the most you need to see what other people are listing theirs at and what the reason is for their price. (Damaged/missing parts, etc)

According to Kelly blue book. Trade in is anywhere from 7.5-9k depending on condition. Private sale is from 9-11k depending on condition. Then its what these cars are going for in your area and what people are willing to pay. Whatever you do good luck and don't get jipped by a dealer if you trade it in. Know your stuff before you ever walk in the door.
