Hello All,

I'm from Prescott, Michigan.

I have been a Ford owner since 1975. March of 2008, I purchased my first GM product. I bought a 2008 Pontiac G6 GXP Sedan. I absolutely love the car.

The problem is, its back at the dealership right now. A week ago, my check engine light started flashing. Took it back to the dealer and they put it on the computer. Apparently, one of the cams has some play in it. The fix is installing some washers or spacers so it doesn't have the play. They are still waiting on the parts that were ordered over a week ago. Really frustrating since it only has 29k miles on it. Hopefully, I'll get it back tomorrow.

Your kidding right! Putting washers or spacers to fix a cam IMO is not a fix, it's a blown engine waiting to happen.

This blows my mind (pun intended :)) I'm looking into this right now. A cam sits on a machined surface. I know your going by what the dealers machanic said but IMO he's lost his mind! Is this warrenty work?

Maybe I just don't know WTF I'm talking about:p. Whatever the outcome I hope the repair works out!

Yes, this is warranty work. The cam has play in it so they say. They took a measurement. Too much play, the head is replaced. Less than the tolerance, they do the fix as described. Apparently it was according to a bulletin they received.

29k miles? Thats not frustrating. Frustration is when your outta warranty.
Im an 05 and they didnt give me the 100000 mile powertrain warranty.
They only offereed it to used GM certified. Because I bought my car new I didnt get it.
Had I traded it in then the next guy to buy it would have received the 100,000 mile PT warranty.

Anyway let us know how that goes.

I got my car back today. The tech actually showed me pictures of what they did to it. They installed a shim so the cams did not have any play. I asked how long that shim would last and they said they really don't know. But the shim is what the GM engineers recommended.

The Service Manager told me if something happens down the road, he will take care of it for me. I trust his every word because he is a friend. I have been very impressed with this dealership since day one especially after having to deal with Ford dearlerships for 31 years.

With the exception of having to wait on parts from GM, I am happy I purchased this car.

I did some asking around about your repair. It seems there a few autos that have an upper piece that keeps the cam in place. The shim is an acceptable repair but not a desired one among folks that constantly push their cars. Good luck again and congrats on having your ride back.
