So my 2006 G6 GTP 3.9L started having a leak last year before storing it. I had my mechanic take a look. He changed the crank seal but wasn't 100% convinced that was the problem (the car is on a third party extended warranty so I didn't care if he was wrong).

When I took it out of storage this year there was some oil on the ground, so back to the mechanic - they changed the oil pan gasket. Still an oil leak, back to the garage they changed the timing cover gasket. Still a leak back to the garage.

Now they're telling me the seal on the oil pan gasket near the timing cover didn't seal 100%, they didn't put enough silicone. They told me they would just pull the pulley accessible by removing the front passenger wheel and apply some silicone from the side. It'll take an hour tops then just let it sit to dry for a bit. I'm supposed to get the car tomorrow.

I have a few questions now
1) Silicone on a gasket? Is this normal practice? sounds weird to me.
2) If it is normal practice, to re seal the silicone - shouldn't they pull the oil pan gasket again and reapply the silicone then place it back on, so that it makes a strong seal? Is just sticking it in the side going to be suffice and last? or is it just a quick fix?

I'm getting really frustrated, car has been leaking oil this entire season and I'm storing it at the end of the week -_-;

Any update?

It does sound odd just to set more silicone on the top. Nevermind the fact that depending on the silicone, it'll degrade from the heat in a short while and you'll have the same problem all over again.

Adding silicone without removing the oil pan or timing cover is a bandaid and is not the right way to fix it. If it works, I wouldn't trust it. I also wouldn't recommend a mechanic that would do that unless requested to by a customer. The proper fix is to remove the pan, new gasket, and new silicone on the gasket if required.
