Paint Job

Yesterday I painted a few of the internals on a whim, including the engine cover, the air intake tube, and the air box.

I kind of did it on a whim and I wish I had more time to work on it, but it's hard to spend a lot of time working on car components vital to the cars operation when you need that car to get you places. I'll probably paint the "3500 V6" silver and do a few more good coats of clear coat on the engine cover. I did a pretty rushed sand job on the intake pipe, but I'll probably get a new one eventually anyway. The air box turned out the best lol.
I used all Rustoleum spray paints. I used a couple of coats of "high heat" black on the air intake components first, "designed to resist heats of up to 1200 degrees." Of course, I don't think that means it will deflect that kind of heat but it may help insulate the air intake at least a little from the engine heat, perhaps. Then I used a couple of coats of metallic blue, (after covering up the joints to keep them black). I figure that maybe the bright metallic paint could deflect some heat too. Then I used a few good coats of clear coat to help hold it all together. I found that the metallic paint likes to be dusty and if you do a thick coating of it (like I did) it will flake around the edges, so clear coat was a must.

The engine cover was trickier. First, I used painters tape to cover up the part I didn't want to paint, being the inside black portion and 3 of the squares. It was tedious work to cut painters tape to cover up round corners lol. Then I painted the blue. Then I removed the tape off of those three squares that I wanted to paint silver and I did that part with a brush (I got spray paint then sprayed it into a container and brushed it on. It was difficult because it gets thick and sticky really fast). When removing the tape you must be careful because it can take some of the paint with it and you may have to touch up. I tried to paint the "3500 V6" silver by using a paint brush with the spray paint again, but it was a complete fail. I couldn't get the spray paint to go on evenly and it looked terrible. So I had to wait for it to try and then sand it off the best I could. I just painted over it with the metallic blue to cover it up for now and it doesn't look too bad. My can of clear coat was being dumb by the time I got to finishing up the engine cover so it didn't give me a very even coating, so I'll have to redo it sometime too

The total cost of the project was $25- 3 cans of Rustoleum heavy-duty paint (metallic silver, metallic blue, and high-heat black [which was on sale luckily]) and some blue painters tape. I happened to have a can of Rustoleum glossy clear coat at home already, thank God because I needed it!
